pf tek edible 1

I've been thinking of growing some edibles, mainly shitake or portabello. I have very limited experience with mycology so point out any options I miss. I've grown oysters, which are the easiest, but it was premade. I love most mushrooms, but I didn't like those...raw or cooked.
I'm under the impression that you need a turkey roaster to pasteurize straw if you start with mycelium because a stove will be too hot. I don't have a turkey roaster, so I've thought about using the pf tek and starting with spores because I do have access to a pressure cooker. It's not that big, but I think it will work. I'm pretty sure I've seen that it works for shitake. But before I go ahead and do it, I have a few questions:
Is there a way to pasteurize the straw without a turkey roaster (using a microwave or stove) so I could start with mycelium?
What other substrates can be used that are most easily available? I know hard wood saw dust is good, but the only way I can get it right now wouold be to get out the chainsaw. Can you use something like ground up oak leaves or coffee grinds?
I threw my oysters outside and covered them with dirt and they started fruiting already this year. Can I put shitakes out after too?
Thanks for your help in advance.

I pasteurize straw in a rubbermaid tote. You can get a enough in one load to build a straw log or fill a laundry basket. You can use pf cakes to spawn the pasteurized straw. Oyster mushrooms are delicious, but you have to know how to cook them. I won't let Mrs Rabbit cook mushrooms, I'm too anal about how they get saute'd in wine sauce...my way.
Do a 'search posts' using the link at the top of the page and search my name and 'pf tek'. I've fruited several species on pf cakes. Shiitake does well on pf cakes if you substitute sawdust for the verm. Use the same exact recipe, just make the sawdust substitution. RR

I believe I was reading your post about that...but i'm not sure where I can get the saw dust. That's what made me think to ask about those other mediums. I've heard of coffe grinds working for oysters. The oak leaves was a random idea, but I can get them easier than anything.
I believe I didn't cook the oysters right. That's why I'm kind of excited to see them making a retun with no effort on my part. I'll look up some recipies before I do anything.
How do you pasteurize the straw in the rubbermaid? What's your heat source?
So once I fruit the cakes I should break em up and fruit the straw like a casing outside? I have a wooded area where I'd like to grow if outdoors is possible. Indoor space is pretty much owned by all my plants. But i'd make an exception for a few shitake dinners
Thanks dude.

Oysters will grow on just about aything, including coir, sawdust, coffee grinds, newspapers, cardboard, straw, and lots I didn't mention. Shiitake will need hardwood sawdust. However, shiitake will grow on pf tek if you'll substitute sawdust for the verm. RR
