Yeah just throw in a small amount of gypsum id say 5% max, and it'll do ya fine.

How much gypsum is proper for a quart of Rye grain to make it extra shakeable for spawn or G2G? I've heard a knife tip.

Also Should it be added when soaking/simmering? or tossed together before PCing?

Thanks very much EntheogenicPeace. I have been thinking of integrating gypsum into my growing and this is helpful. I see that you talk about washing grains before soaking. I'm sure that helps with the grain 'gravy' that is generated hehe. I have been on a kick of trying to add nutrition to my grains and bulk substrate, so I have stopped washing my grains(which i did after simmering). But the grain gravy does tend to stick to my grains a bit even after straining. A little extra effort and muscle makes jar shaking ok, but it could be better. Do you think the gypsum could help the way I do it? Thanks.

i was going to go by Roger Rabbits rye tek and put that together tomorrow actually. It calls for soaking the rye grain in half and half coffee/water mixture with gypsum in it for 24-36 hours, then boiling it and straining it. Then all the moisture required is retained within the seeds and no need to have large amounts of water floating about in there. This will be my first time growing, and was wondering what the purpose of the gypsum was? is it to lower the acidity of the coffee? or is it just to boost the calcium and sulfur? all of the growing materials i have are good quality and organic (the rye and the coffee) but for the gypsum i just got gardening grade gypsum. will this work fine?

Horticulture gypsum is what you want. Just use my tek above and it will come out perfect. I promise.

The 'grain gravy' underhill talks of is dust, dirt, and starches that absorb excess water to make a 'glue' with no nutritional value to the mushrooms, but bacteria love it. If you want to leave it in, be my guest, but don't complain when your jars fail due to wetspot bacteria. Grains should be washed before the soak/simmer to remove that debris.

i'm pretty sure what i used was horticulture gypsum...i just covered 8 cups of rye grain (rinsed before hand of course) with about 8-9 pints of half and half water/coffee mixture, and added 2 tsp of gypsum. letting it sit till tomorrow evening when i'm done with classes when i plan on PCing and inoculating my jars with oysters and lion's manes. wish me luck folks, this is my first attempt!

You should cover 8 cups of rye grain with at least 16 cups of water, after giving them a good rinse.

Thanks for explaining RR. I don't have a lot of contamination but I do occasionaly. I was having a hard time figuring out what could have caused it each time though. I had put it down to bad prints, but now I am not so sure. I'll start rinsing my grain pre-soak and see if I notice any less contams.
