Putting vermiculite on top of cakes after they've started to pin, Is this OK?
    #6806123 - 04/18/07 08:29 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

hey everyone,
my friend is on his first grow using pf tek. His cakes started pinning after 2 weeks but not as he would have hoped. The cakes took a little over a month to colonize because he couldnt get the temps right so he thought the cakes might be a little dehydrated. He had read that a layer of vermiculite on the top of cake was good for feeding the cake water, so he decided to try it to a few cakes that had little going.

my question is:
Do you think that is a good idea or should he had just let it go.

Would have dunked at birth but didnt know about that at the time. He was not sure if dunking while pinning was the right thing to do or now

Always dunk and roll before you birth cakes, even if you can see tiny pinheads forming, it will help a lot in the long run. And verm on top of the cakes isn't bad for it, like you read, it helps hold moisture from misting and will help feed your cakes the necassary water content to produce those shrooms we all want. You can even lightly spray the verm on a regular basis to help keep it moist.

Its been 2 weeks and thiers about 20 pins, most have been there for 2 or 3 days. The largest one is probably an inch long but its very thin. All of them look thin. Thats what has me thinking the cakes may be too dry to fruit. But hopefully not!

Dont worry to much, this hobby is all about trial and error. If this is your first grow and you made those cakes yourself, and did all the work, I for one commend you on getting pins alone. At first you will wanna do anything and everything to get them to grow, and sometimes that can be the problem. Just let em be they sound like they are off to a good start. Getting this far you must have done some things correctly. What strain are they? Small fruits could be kinda based on the strain, so dont worry too much. The one thing I would say to try and do is fan those things out as much as you can, if the FC looks kinda dry fluff up your perlite, add more water (spray) but FAE is your best friend for nice fruits IMO. Alright enough of my pep-talk..

Cover the top with approximately 1/4 inch or so. You don't need a lot to do the trick.

I wouldn't put verm on top. That is for only if you have made a vermiculite rezevoir in the middle. If you don't have that rezevoir no need. after your first flush just dunk it for 7 hours.

Well it's not a big deal either way, so don't worry about it. Just dunk and roll after the first flush and you'll be set. And I'm sure your first flush will be fine, verm on top isn't going to really hinder anything.
