PeatPoo Substrate???

I used a 1x1x3 planter today to try a small experiment. Part of my gripe with poo, besides that it's a shi**y mess, is that it packs too tight when wet and seems to be a bit of a growth inhibitor compared to straw runs. So i mixed about 1/3 peat moss into the poo until it was pretty homogenous and it made a nice pooey but lighter and "airy-er" mix. You could mash it into a clump, but it wouldn't hold up to a thump (as it were...) I laid 1 inch of straw in the bottom of the planter for drainage and then a 1 inch layer of peatpoo. sprinkled a thin layer of straw on top and sprinkled more peatpoo and then spawned and lasagna layered my way up to the top where I finally laid about a 1 inch plain peat layer to help hold in water. I think mixing the straw and poo may help food wise and i also cover my outdoor patches with green fresh grass to hold in moisture and push up the nites as it rots. Didn't see any references to lightening up the heaviness of poo with peat so thought to start this thread. If nothing else, we should know if it's good in a couple or three weeks yes?
 Thoughts? and Best Wishes!

Straw itself might well have solved your problem, AND provided nutrients for the myc.
Still, I'm curious to see how you do

Thanks! Straw and poo is a little messy too....the peat seemed to take some of the "muddiness" and mess of working with it out. We do indoor/outdoor and all methods to hand out here so I'm hoping this will be good....

Peat has NO nutrient value. (coir would have been a better choice) Straw underneath a substrate, for drainage. Is a good place for moisture to pool & bacteria breed in.
Your "planter" might survive, outdoors. In in-door conditions. I would wager if will turn into a mold festival.

I've used vermiculite for the same purpose, to break up the manure and make it fluffier. However, coir and/or coffee grinds are a better choice. RR

Oh yeah - it's outdoors. I concur with your opinions; I never thought of the peat as nutritional - just as a consistency modifier and excess moisture buffer....That's why I was dubious of trying it, but it seemed to homogenize so well I didn't think there'd be any nutrition interruption and that the mycelium would travel well and perhaps even faster. My first grow (long ago, far away...) was in a straight pile of poo, and the shrooms were ugly and puny compared to mixed/other substrates. Poo potent, straw sized and brown rice purty! That's what I'd really like to see!
