A few quick questions.
    #6805353 - 04/18/07 05:24 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Does surface area on a cake matter? Iv got 3 half pints almost 2 weeks into incubation and was wondering what kind of effect it would have to half them or something?
Also, iv seen lots of pictures of mushrooms dropping their spores, and was wondering if i could put my cakes in a shallow container of jar sustrate and let it fall on there rather than filling a syringe and all that? or can you shake them out?

thanks

i meant half them during fruiting just to clear that up.

Fruiting chambers are far from being sterile. Any kind of uncolonized jar substrate will get overrun by mold. Prints are the way to go. A single print will be enough for quite a few syringes. It may be a hassle, but it will pay off in the long run.

Yeah, just do a spore print, don't mess with trying to catch falling spores or trying to get them to colonize any kind of substrate by falling onto it.

As far as cutting them in half, theres an upside and a downside to that. If surface area has proved to make a difference with fruiting, then the upside will obviously be that you'll have more surface area(you would just have to make sure that the cut side is down when you fruit them). BUT, the downside to all that is that you lose substrate mass, and the more mass the better, cause the water content inside the cake will be higher, resulting in bigger fruits.

If its something you're interested in trying, you can always try it with a couple cakes, and then birth the others the regular way, and then compare the results and see which does better.

Good luck!

Good plan. You'll learn a lot from doing that, and then you'll know what works best for you and what/what not to do next time. Personally I love casing my cakes with 50/50 peat/verm. I'll never birth another cake after having such great results with casing and such disappointing results with cakes. With all the work involved, its worth it to do a couple more steps to yeild WAY better results, IMHO.

Good luck to you sir(or mam)! :mushroom2::rastamon::mushroom2:
