Is the coconut fiber a lot of folks here use chopped up finely or is it long hairs? Is it important?

Im pretty sure that's coconut fiber, you need coconut coir. Could be wrong though..
Edit: Long hairs being fibers, chopped up finely being coir...

The stuff you want is sold as 'coir' in hydroponic shops, or as 'reptile bedding' in pet shops where they won't know what coir is if you ask them. It's the ground up stuff, not the long hairs. RR

OK thanks!
Do you know why the longer hairs don't work? Isn't it the same material? I'll use the coir, I'm just interested in the science behind the difference.

Coir is partly decomposed. I don't think fibre is. I read up on it when considering using it as a substrate (about which I've heard nice things).
Basically, coir is composted, which is why shroomies like them.
