Liquid in jar bottoms?
    #6804062 - 04/18/07 11:45 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, I have inoculated 4 jars with BRF/Verm. When I finished mixing, it looked fine. Finished sterilizing, it looked fine. After 2 days incubating, the mixture has shrunk a bit, and now 3 of the jars have liquid settled in the bottom. When I tilt the jar, the liquid can move around. The mixture is tight to the edges, so it doesn't looked too soaked.

I know you can germinate and grow spores in liquid, will this excess liquid in the jar cause any problems? I have my holes uncovered, and a coffee filter taped to the top to prevent foreign materials from getting inside, and I am sure some of the water will evaporate.

I am thinking of starting a grow log once I get a new sd card for my camera.

sounds like you naused up the initial water content.
didn't cover the jars with foil when "cooking".
or put too much water in the pc /pan,
letting water boil over into the jars will skew the water content.
use a trivet to keep the jars out of the water.

spores will germinate /grow in a liquid medium,a liquid culture (lc).
such jars will have adequate gas exchange (ge).

in a pf jar, gas exchange, especially when wet on the bottom,
is reduced to almost zero (anaerobic) favouring bacteria.

The reasons given above are the most common reasons for excess water in pf jars. I'd give them very little chance of success. I'd suggest making up a fresh batch.

Be sure to elevate the jars completely out of the water when you steam them. Put whatever you have in the bottom of the pot when you boil to raise the jars up. Anything from rocks, to a metal shelf, to a row or two of extra lid rings from jars will work. Get where the water isn't even touching your jars, and cover the tops with foil to prevent the water that drips down from the lid from entering through the vent/inoculation holes. Good luck to you and welcome to the boards.

I put three empty half pint jars with no lids in the bottom of the pc, then put the metal plate on top of those. Keeps my jars a few inches above the water

another cause could be that you just inoculated with too much spore solution.
it can be quite difficult to squeeze out 1/2 ml (cc) doses.
you could practice with plain water to get a feel for what you need to do.
a syringe tecnique if you like.

youll be fine..when I make Wild bird seed jars I always have water on the bottom...usually not with BRF tho...But youll be fine...quite often my jars stall halfway through the incubating process due to lack of water..which is the reason I usually add a lil extra to the bottom...Notice I said a little..Like 1-2 mm max

Well, I investigated with a pretty decent sniff, and learned that all my jars were contaminated. But, fortunately, I have another syringe coming in on the way, hopefully tomorrow. For your guys' info I have to boil my jars. And I only left the foil with the holes on the jars. I am going to be much more careful with my water on the next run.

But, due to hope, I threw the contents of the jars into an outdoor area and covered them up with a bunch of dirty perlite. Who knows, maybe one day I will be surprised. Probably not.

Did you use 1 syringe on all 4 jars? That right there could have been your problem. You only need 1ml per jar and it'll do just fine. Also, when you're measuring out your verm, brf, and water, a good safe ratio is: 2parts verm/1 part brf/1 part water. Which for each jar comes out to be; 1/2 cup verm, 1/4 cup brf, and 1/4 cup water. Never had any issues and no contams ever.

Good luck, and don't get discouraged. This hobby(like everyone will tell you) is all about patience.

Highly unlikely. A half-pinter is holding like 60mL to start with, unless you're squeezing out 20mL when you mean to squeeze out 0.5, I don't see how this could be the source of your problems.

I actually like to mix my PF cakes a little dry, so I can use 10mL of inoculant (shroom water, not spores). That takes a little bit of eyeballing skill, but it hasn't failed me yet.
