Taped Holes Or Not?

I've searched what seems like thousands of posts and still can't find a final answer about taping the holes in a monotub.
Many people seem to think you should tape the holes up or cover them with a trash bag until fruiting, others seem to just leave the holes filled with polyfill for the entire term of the grow.
Is this something that is basically whatever the grower prefers, or is one way actually superior/more beneficial than the other way?
Sorry if this topic is redundant, but as I said I couldn't find any concrete answers and this is my last (hopefully) point of confusion...

During colonization, you want a high CO2 level, so I'd leave all or most covered. You'll still get some gas exchange because the lid isn't air tight. At full colnonization, you want maximum fresh air exchange, so I wouldn't use polyfill or anything else on the holes. Leave them open. I realize that's not the 'tek', but it's how I'd do it. RR

Wow, thanks for the fast response!!
Would the polyfill not be necessary for the fully colonized poo because the mycelium would be strong enough to ward off any contaminants?
Would it hamper anything to leave the polyfill in for the extra protection, or is it just really not needed?
Thanks for your help!

I guess it depends on hole size. If you have large holes, you may want the polyfill in there so it doesn't dry out too quickly. If you used a drill to create many small holes, I don't think polyfill is needed in that situation.
Also, I would recommend putting the substrate into plastic shoe-box sized containers and placing them in the monotub. This way, you can create a dark, high-co2 environment using the lid for each shoe box, and when it's time to fruit, simply place into a monotub and take the lid off the show boxes. Also, it is easier to dunk and dispose of than a hulking container full of substrate.

I am a bit hesitant to take out my polyfil during fruiting. I don't want to get a contam at that point. My substrates seem pretty contam resistant though. Even through my crappy dunk method lol. I'll try some more of your advice RR and take my polyfil out of a tub and see how it goes. Should I take it out after pins form?
