Schultz soil conditioner vs. vermiculite
    #6804516 - 04/18/07 01:46 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,this is my 1st post here, I love the board. Now I'll get to the point- Has anyone used "Schultz Soil Conditioner" instead of vermiculite as a casing mix? If so, to waht success? The bag claims
it to be better than vermiculite in every way (of course). Also, how
many years can a good spore print that has been kept in tupperware last for and still make a good germination? Any help would be GREATLY appreciatted!!!

Thanks, B

Is that the name of the brand, soil conditioner? They sometimes call Peat Moss soil conditioner, and if this is what it is yes it will work great, although most people will recommend a 50/50% mix of peat moss and vermiculite. You can also use coco coir which is available at just about any pet store, they sell it as reptile cage bedding.

As for the print, I here that stored under the right conditions it can last for a few years..

Hope that helps.. Oh and welcome to Shroomery..B)

I have 13 jars with schultz and organic brown rice flour on formula: 2/3cup schultz, 1/3 cup water, 1/3 cup flour.. but you can adjust formula to meet your moisture needs. when you pour into half pint jars DONT pack it.. if your mixture is sludgy and leaves no air-room in jars when filled then you need more flour/schultz.

The schultz takes VERY little water like 1/3-1/4cup but you can judge after you do some jars..

All my jars are colonized atleast 1/3-1/2 way so far and doing very well and this is my FIRST grow. I live in Oregon and there is no Vermiculite here to save my life and the feed store showed me to Schultz which says its better then vermiculite but more importantly it just WORKS!

Its only like $5.99 I recommend any person hard-pressed to find vermiculite to GET THIS cause it works and i cooked my jars 1 hour at 12psi and NO contams. I used a simple cardboard glovebox I made using scissors and cut a window then cover with plastic wrap and tape and sealed it all up and made arm holes.. bought some cheap gloves and 70% alcohol and inoculated with LC (PESA strain).

but your answer to your question is: YES! and it WORKS!

Oh PS: I inoculated my jars 6 days ago and had to just re-inoculate 3 jars which didnt grow, but are doing fine now.
