Koh Samui Taking a LONG TiME
    #6803582 - 04/18/07 09:25 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

So I have these two, Quart jars, inoculated with Koh Samui (from Spores101). I shot them up on the 26th of March, it is now the 18th of April and they're only about 45-50% colonized. One jar seems to be doing slightly better than the other. Aerial mycelium is present (though it was cobweb at first but I was wrong) and its doing alright. My question is though, should they be taking this long? I have them in an incubator at an average of 83F. in complete dark. I've read that Koh Samui is supposed to be a rapid colonizer so this seems a bit odd.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

(I would have posted some pictures but they came out horrible. I need a new camera.)

Well my jars usually take 10-15 days to fully colonize. How's your moisture content and gas exchange?

They're grain jars?

Have you shaken them?

They're Rye grain. I purchased them presterilized from Mushbox.com.

As for moisture, one jar seems to be most moist than the other, (ie- in one I was able to shake all the grain off the walls of the jar, and the other I was not, a little sticky, one or two grains clung to the jar.

As for Gas exchange, I actually had none for the first 3 weeks, I had them completely sealed (although they did colonize during that time, albeit not completely). I just yesterday, took off the seal layer and placed simple bandaid pieces over the inoculation holes.

And as for shaking, I have already done that twice. Once when they were about 25% colonized, then again, just a few days ago. Its funny though, the one that was doing better before I shook it, is actually doing the worst now, and the one that wasnt doing as well, seems to be flourishing after the shake. They kind of switched places.

I bumped up the temperature yesteday in the incubator from an average of 80.5F to 83.5F and also performed the aformentioned bandaid procedure, So i'll have to see how it goes after a few days. Im hoping that will do the trick, but any other input would be appreciated.

I don't have experience in grains, but I know that most people will recommend you put the temperature back down to 80F. The mycelium generates several degrees inside the jar while colonising.

That may be part of the problem, another may be that you purchased the jars.

Period.

That's your answer bud-- these things always NEED air exchange, and you had yours starving for the entire time--

:goodluck:

Once in a while my grain jars dry out and stall. Or they are to wet and stall. You should start making your own so you know whats up. In your case it could be there are 4+ possibilities and no way to really narrow it down to one problem. I inoculated 12 jars with African T and it took about 2 weeks to start growth. Some strains are faster than others. Gulf Coast shows white in the jar in about 4-6 days. I bet you have a slow growing strain. I also dont like incubating jars. Its a good way to dry them out. Room temp is better in my opinion.

Lack of air exchange will do it. LOL.

I had a feeling that, that was probably it. I hope I didn't starve them too badly. Ive got high hopes though.

I'll update in a day or two when I see some change.

Thanks for the help, all.

As said, it's PROBABLY lack of air exchange (which can be corrected) but could also be due to the grains being too moist or too dry (perhaps due to too much air exchange). It is hard to say.

When given the chance mycelium likes to grow so there is definitely something effecting the speed of colonization here. Try taking them out of the incubator and just putting them on a shelf at room temperature. Perhaps they're producing too much heat?

I hope something here helps.

Peace and good luck.

I'm going to leave them both in the incubator for the time being, I lowered the temp a bit, now its at 82F steady. If by a day or two, I don't see any change in the jar the isn't doing too well, (the moist one) I will take it out and see how it fares at room temperature. The room averages 74F. I really feel it was just the lack of gas exchange, but we'll see how it goes.

The help has been much appreciated.
