my 1st cake
    #6803328 - 04/18/07 08:06 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I used a mix of BRF & Verm for my cakes and out of 4 this is the only one to has no major contams. I did not even expect this 1 go come this far because i did cut corners and used a microwave to steam sterilize. This was a little experiment just to see if i could do it from scratch and to use up the rest of spores from my myco bag.

These cakes took a while to fully colonize and i lost 2 to some mould, may have even been bruising, if that is possible?

Anyway i put the last 2 in humidity tents with a tray of wet verm underneath for humidity. One of these began to grow a green spot so i quickly disposed of this and now im left with my last cake.

I am growing Mexican Huaulta in 250ml cakes by the way.

Just wanted your opinions so far.

Also i have noticed a few things:

The fruits are small, about 2-3 inches and fairly thin. Is this the strain or because i something to do with the environment or cake?

The mushrooms only seem to be growing on near the bottom where there is less mycelium

The top of my cake has, what looks to be a bluey white color to it, is this contam or could it be bruising? Does mycelium bruise?

Also on the top of the cake there are these raised white bumps will slightly blackish tops, these are pin heads arent they?

Yes, myc bruises...looks like bruising from handling, prolly while birthing. Those lil raised white bumps will slightly blackish tops look like aborts to me. It also looks like the cake was only about 85% colonized when it was birthed, which might account for your low yield. What are the parameters inside the humidity tent, temp, RH, etc?

Peace.

Make sure to dunk and roll after the flush, most would recommend doing so before hand as well.

I don't recall ever seeing verm used to create humidity but i guess if it works..id be weary of any pooling water under there tho, contams apparently love standing water so be careful of that.

other than that it looks nice, can't wait for mine. GL!

Temp is room temp so bout 21 / 70 and dont know about humidity.

I do not think that there is enough humidity because im guessing there should be condensation?

What is the average fruiting temp 28 / 80?

Haven't got my heat mat underneath the bag yet because im experimenting on something else so this is being put to one side.

Thanks for your input

70 is ok for fruiting i believe, I don't think the pros like heating pads too much if at all...but i'll let them chime in on it.

Search your heart out of this site theres so much info out there to absorb.

Three parameters for stimulating the growth of mushrooms:

1. Increased FAE,
2. Introduction of a light cycle,
3. Drop in temperature.

You haven't really done these things, so what you have there is a pretty poor pinset, massive abortion, and one solitary mushroom winning against the odds and growing to a middling size.

1. To increase FAE, just take the tent off every hour (as often during the day or night as you can) and give it a fanning. That'll get rid of the carbon dioxide that's built up and replace it with oxygen.
2. A good light cycle is a 12/12 on/off with a bulb which kicks out some nice blue light. Even setting it on a windowsill where it'll get a nice cycle is good.
3. You need to drop the temperature into the low 70s (Fahrenheit). Room temperature should be good, but you haven't specified what room temperature is where you are.

To get better fruits, you need to crank up humidity to something in the neighbourhood of 95-100% RH. Wet vermiculite will not do this. The simplest way is to replace that vermiculite with soaked perlite, which will happily give that little tent all the airborne moisture it needs.

To give those mushrooms even more moisture, dunk and roll the cake. Search this subforum for 'dunk and roll'. I recommend the Hippie3 dunk tek for dunking (Google it).

Hope this helps.

You want to keep introduce as much fresh air as possible throughout the day without dropping the humidity. I really recommend you switch to a PMP. It's just a cheap rubbermaid tote from wal-mart with some small holes drilled in it and 3-4in of damp perlite on the bottom. Your humidity will pretty much always be just fine if you do it like that. Mushrooms need water to grow! Remember, they're over 90% water.

Thanks exagram

Will try and give them all stimulants. I used 2 air out bag a couple of time a day and the others i was also doing, kind of. I used 2 leave the bag under my windowsil so they were not in direct sunlight throughout the day and the temp is about 21 / 70 so think that should be ok.

The humidity is the one i believe im having the problem with so have replaced the verm with perlite and last nite gave the cake a dunk for about 15 hours, there were small mushrooms developing but that hippie guide said this would be ok?

By the way that hippie guide was really helpful and very straight forward.

Etam, i will defo look into other ways apart from these tents if all goes well then i will make more cakes and hopefully get a better result. But first need some spore so am looking into making LC or transferring some mycelium over to a water solution to put into my new cakes.

Does any1 here do anything like this?
