i jus finially pulled my cakes out of the bowl of water this morn rolled them and put them on top of 3 inches of damp perlite. i have 2 bubbler wands under the perlite for fae's....
my Q's are
do i still need to fan? if so how often?
should there be holes drilled in the lid and around the top for gas exchange?
Should i still mist the cakes with the perlite in there? if so how often?
Do i need to dump water on the perlite every so often to keep it moist or will it get me through the growing cycle the way it is?
Lastly i put a digital RH gauge in there (it was cheap only six dollars) it only says 50% rh in there now, i jus put it in 10 mins ago does it take time to build up? or is it jus to cheap?
thanks alot guys i'll get pics on here once they start to pin....

the cakes should sit on lids/foil etc,not directly on the perlite. fan as often as you can, after misting. if the perlite was adequately hydrated (and drained) it won't need any further water added to it. you can have dozens of 6mm holes spread over all sides of the tub, including top and bottom,to help provide fae between fannings. or leave the lid slightly askew. don't know about your humidity guage. you could try adding another inch or so of perlite. gl.

ive heard alot about cheap RH auges and it sounds like urs probly wont work at the high H levels 80% and + if you soak all ur perlite the night before or 24 hours, then drain it all. Giver 2-3 inches at the bottom. You'll have plenty enough RH and plenty enough time for the full cycle.
cant wait for the pics peace out !

I fan mine 4-6 times a day.
You can drill holes in the top, sides, and bottom or you can just fan or you can keep your lid loose and fan.
You can mist up until pins form and then you can still add water i the divot via a spoon. I wouldn't get large pins or shrooms wet though. Mist when it looks dry.
Your perlite should have been emmerced in water then strained until no water is dripping from the bottom of the colindar. Your perlite will be fine for approx. 6 weeks. By this time your cakes should be finished. Remember: DAMP perlite only; No standing water in fc.
Throw away that dig hygrometer. They are junk. Get a nice analog, and be sure to calibrate it. If you have 4-5" of perlite in the bottom of your fc- you are in the high 90% RH range.
I would sit them on the lids. I have heard of the reflective nature of the foil can cause the shrooms to grow down, but I have not ever tried to use foil. You can get 8pks. of Kerr plastic, screw on lids that will keep the cake raised off the perlite.
Good Luck!

Lookin good so far .
Like MikeMushroom mentioned, fanning 4-6 times a day AFTER misting is a good amount.
Mist as often as you fan, but not excessively(maybe about 10 good squirts or so). And make sure that the mist is as fine as you can get it. When you mist, make sure you spray into the air above the tub, letting the mist fall into it, not straight down at the cakes. You don't want droplets forming on your cakes and causing aborts.
When it comes to hygrometers, I like to be safe rather than sorry, and for me it adds to the fun of the growing experience to have nice toys to go along with it . I got a nice little digital reptile hygrometer for $20 off ebay, its accurate, and it goes up to 99%. I'd say spend at least $20 on a decent one if not more for a really nice one, but again, you don't HAVE to.
Drilling holes in the tub isn't necassary if you make sure to fan consistantly 4-6 times a day. It's easier to keep the temp and RH up without any holes in the tub.
Wet perlite is what you want, thourougly soaked and drained of excess water through a strainer. Standing water causes contamination.
Good luck and HAVE FUN! Thats what this is all about!
