out for a walk in the woods *pics*
    #6801906 - 04/18/07 12:05 AM (14 years, 23 days ago)

went for a walk in the woods today in hopes of grabbing a few more Oyster shrooms. It was a beautiful sunny day. I was able to capture some of mother natures finest scenes........
I believe the first is a Coprinus micaceus

the next two, I believe to be a sort of Amanita

a polypore of the Tramets variety

a beautiful cluster of Oyster Shrooms

a flower and a cold blooded homicide!

Respect,

IHS

Respect,

Thats awesome. We have a native wasp here in Aus which collects spiders and burys them alive with her eggs in a mud cocoon so they can have a fresh feed when they hatch. Pretty cool I thought.

I did get my fill, and then some. I'm pretty sure I picked close to 25lbs. I was not harvesting anything larger than, say, the diameter of a beer can, Ice House of course, the large ones seemed to have way too much water content. So much so that by the time you dried them out the texture wasnt the same. I wont pick any more this year. I find the Oyster mushroom a great subject for my camera. They rarely take a bad picture. Combine that mushroom with the green pristine habitat of the PNW and my new camera and...........

a picture to be proud of!

IHS

Hey Ice, are those flowers usually purple??

In Northern CA we have an abundance of those in teh woods, but I have only seen the white variety.

oysters, like many species, seem to be better if you collect them on a dry day, as they give up a lot of water content whilst still alive and vigorous.

Laetiporus spp. are similar in this reguard, as when collected while soaking in the northwest, they tend to become somewhat stringy when cooked even at the margins.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

No... The white species here in the CA Bay Area are white, until they shrivel and die, they never turn purple.

Different species of Trillium range in colours from white to purple as Ice stated above, but i found no indication that the colours change from white to purple as the flower matures or ages.

ermm

i find no indication that you even looked for such information, maybe try google

Trillium Ovatum has showy upright white flowers (turning pink to purple with age)

Trillium ovatum - Our western lily that never fails to stop people in full stride. ... Gorgeous white three petaled flowers fade to wine purple.

T. ovatum Pursh
WHITE or WESTERN TRILLIUM

    Stem 1–7 dm
Leaf ± sessile, 4–20 cm, acute to acuminate
Flower erect to nodding; sepals 0.5–6 cm, 1.5–45 mm wide, lanceolate; petals 0.5–7 cm, 1.8–45 mm wide, linear to widely obovate, white, aging pink; stamens 1.7–15 mm
    Chromosomes: n=5
Ecology: Common. Redwood and mixed-evergreen forest on moist wooded slopes
    Elevation: 10–2000 m.
Bioregional distribution: Northwestern California, Central Western California
Distribution outside California: to w Canada, Colorado
    Highly variable

that being said, I don't know/care what grows in the bay area, I was letting IHS and anyone else interested know what the flowers in his pics were.  now if you will excuse me, I have to go make up some more shit so I can fool more people here into thinking I actually know what I'm talking about when I post, suckers :smirk:.
