cob web or mycelium?
    #6801509 - 04/17/07 08:34 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

new grower here..

have a few PF tek batches on the grow.. my first batch is colonizing ( so i think) though the mycelium looks very 'furry' thick and white.
(is this normal?)

I read about cob web mold and it explains that it is off white or grey-ish with very fine strands so it leads me to believe my jars are ok.

Any thoughts?

PS.. also i think due to my inexperience, some pockets were left in the original substrate (verm / BRF) and some dry verm from the top has trickled down to the side... no Myc will grow in this area.. (i assume myc doesnt grow on dry verm) is this normal as well?

Thanks in advanced.

You'll be ok. If you doubt the integrety of your vermiculite contaminant barrier, you can use micropore tape over the inoculation holes. Just watch the mycelium. Cobweb is not a normal contaminant of colonizing jars, although other molds are. If you used a vendor syringe and followed sterile technique, it should all work out.

Could you post a photo of the cake. It would be easier to examine whether it is contam. or just myc. Usually it is just myc. because the "buffer" Vermiculite acts as a pretty good air filter.
