What do you think of these casings? (PF tek)
    #6796197 - 04/16/07 06:51 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

so made the cakes using the PF tek method with B+ and GT. i cased these about a week ago with coir/vermaculite/peatmoss/hydrated lime. i've been incubating them at around 80 deg with saran wrap on. the one on the left seems to be moving along a lot faster but i'm really not sure how well it's doing.....i think i made the mistake of letting a few mycelium chunks reside on the surface of the casing causing them to grow real fast. and on the right casing, i think i used too much casing (not 1:4, was more like 1:2). so what do you guys think i should do?

thanks for all your help in advance.

I think you should fruit pf cakes as cakes and you'd already be seeing mushrooms by now. Pf cakes already have the verm in them, so little is gained by casing that can't be gained by dunk and roll.

In the long run, you'll get your nutrition-determined max of shrooms anyway, long as you dunk. It's just a matter, in my experience, of how long you want to wait for it.

I got a solid quarter (8g, actually) out of one 10oz B+ PF cake when I crumbled, cased, and scraped. In one flush. This was my first attempt at a casing, and it was 100% verm. If anyone pulls a dry quarter off their bare cakes in one flush, I'd love to hear about it, because I wait a good while for my bare (or even rolled) cakes to pin and fruit, and never get that much in the first flush. I think the additional surface area you get from a relatively shallow tray casing is really beneficial to getting an immediate--and proportionally large--crop.

And yes, I know scraping isn't popular without overlay, but I thought I'd give it a go, based on one little-respected tek ("Sea of Shrooms"). It worked, so I'll probably do a comparison test with my next batch (16 10oz healthies on their way!).

Also, I'm no expert, but you can save that left tray with a good scrape, I say. But I'd use a higher verm concentration in your next casing, way less likely to overlay due to low nutrient content.

If you will accept the caveat that I've never had to do this, I'll tell you what I would do in your situation:

Scrape the casing up, let it rest/repair covered for a day or two, then open up and fruit. In my experience, an incompletely-colonized casing will finish colonizing during its fruiting phase. But remember that my experience is limited.
