Check Valve on aquarium air pump?
    #6799284 - 04/17/07 11:29 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Is this really necessary or could it be possible to get by without it? I really wouldnt want to drive back to the pet store

Its a great extra measure to ensure that contams dont enter your FC. I use them and they are very cheap.

No need;
so long as your tubing is hung higher than the water level.

The check valves purpose:
Is to stop water from getting into the pump.
If the power goes off.

How does a CHECK VALVE stop contaminates?
It's not a filter.

I think the water should filter the contams right? What if I put a drop of peroxide in there or would that nuke my shrooms?

I said it helped not stopped. The check valve isnt a filter? I am looking at one's filter right now. Its small, yes but it is a filter.

Something designated as a "check valve", is one.
They are universally defined as,
"A small device allowing water to flow in one direction only".
I breed/raise discus in 100 gallon tanks.
Some show & others bare.

I know exactly what a "check valve is".

Reality is most inexpensive SO CALLED aquarium use check valves.
Are not even that.
They are "flapper valves"

FLAPPER VALVE

TRUE CHECK VALVE

There is NO FILTER in EITHER.

This is the item I was referring to

http://www.petdiscounters.com/Check-Valve-with-Air-Filter-p3436.html

"Valve also contains a small amount of material to filter particles from the air before it enters your aquarium."

In the famous words of Steve Martin:

"Well, EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE ME"
