the VA tech massacre ..yes..it is the conservatives' fault...

Ames takes a systematic look at the scores of rage killings in our public schools and workplaces that have taken place over the past 25 years. He claims that instead of being the work of psychopaths, they were carried out by ordinary people who had suffered repeated humiliation, bullying and inhumane conditions that find their origins in the "Reagan Revolution." Looking through a carefully researched historical lens, Ames recasts these rage killings as, essentially, failed slave rebellions.

when you put the pieces together..the inescapable conclusion is that the conservative social engineers have succeeded..beyond their wildest dreams..in creating an atomized society of socially powerless individuals...in past..these ppl would have organized themselves into unions or similar groups to address shared grievances...but when this kind of organization is no longer possible..the only options are to either accept the status quo or to go on a killing spree...in some cases..a small group may form and go on a much bigger killing spree..as witness mohammed atta &co...

and why is it all the conservatives' fault??...their record of union-busting is well-known and documented.. and they are quite proud of it...in a broader sense..george orwell perfectly explains the conservatives' interests in creating social isolation ..

Quote:
We have cut the links between child and parent, and between man and man, and between man and woman. No one dares trust a wife or a child or a friend any longer. But in the future there will be no wives and no friends. Children will be taken from their mothers at birth, as one takes eggs from a hen. The sex instinct will be eradicated. Procreation will be an annual formality like the renewal of a ration card. We shall abolish the orgasm. Our neurologists are at work upon it now. There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother.

one thing that orwell was wrong about..however..is that there is in fact something called human nature that will resist this effort...but the only vehicle of resistance available is shooting rampages and/or terrorist acts..which is far from optimal and might even work to justify the states' cause...

That makes sense. I mean, a human being is just an animal after all. If you corner an animal it will lash out in an attempt to defend itself. I suppose one of the faults of our evolved consciousness is that it determines some people will their own corners a little earlier then the rest of us.

Virginia Tech student Blake Harrison said he was on his way to class near Norris Hall when he saw chaos.

“This teacher comes flying out of Norris, he’s bleeding from his arm or his shoulder ... all these students were coming out of Norris trying to take shelter in Randolph [Hall]. All these kids were freaked out,” Harrison said.

The students and faculty were barricading themselves in their classrooms after what one person described as an Asian male in a vest opened fire.

The shooter was “wearing a vest covered in clips was just unloading on their door, going from classroom to classroom … They said it never seemed like it was going to stop and there was just blood all over,” Harrison said.

I think it has less to do with Ronald Reagan and more to do with a society that for some insane reason brainwashes their children into believing that they are special little angles and that life owes them whatever they want. Unfortunately, when the children leave the "perfect world nest" and have to deal with real life where they aren't special little angles that life owes whatever their desires dictate, they get upset, and in extreme cases, they lash out.

Exactly. The parents never bring the child to interaction with the real world, and they become secluded. Then you force them into a public, formal institution like school and they aren't going to be able to deal with the interactions they are faced with.

Result: exactly. These parents need to engage their child in a lot of interactive activity with the real world when they are very young, and to be capable of supporting them as they become older and become more involved with the real world.

The cause of this tragedy can be summed up in two words: Bad Parenting. :nonono:

Fear/cowardice on the part of those who were there in that building. Sure they can argue that nobody should have to be put in that situation. However the fact remains that they were put in that situation and it seems (judging by the death toll) nobody who was there tried to do a goddamn thing about it. Surely a group of 10 unarmed men (likely half that number) could have easily charged and overpowered one man with 2 handguns.

Exactly. We should be protected. The step that some governments take (like in Europe) is to take away guns due to horrific gun violence such as this. The only thing this accomplishes is for those with a criminial mentality to rule over the rest of the population. After all of the stories I have read about Muslim youths pushing people around on buses and flicking knifes and people dying when they stand up to them (after all, the police certainly aren't around to protect anyone), I could not tolerate an America that put its citizens in that kind of harm. Fuck that! :nonono:

I haven't been reading the news on this story at all, but I need to know, is this point of view, that if these people had concealed weapons on them, this would not have happened to the severity that it did? I need to know that America isn't going to take all of its citizens' rights away. I read the letter of the kid that was there that speculated as to what would have happened if concealed weapons weren't prohibited on campus...

I think this could effect the political atmosphere if this point of view is being raised by a lot of Americans. The Democrats typically want to take further steps of gun control, whereas the Republicans don't tread upon that right. Is this going to be an issue, do you guys think?

I'm too tired to give a good response to this at the moment however I honestly don't think they will push to take away our right to bear arms over this.

People are actually discussing it over at msnbc.com (on the forums) and it seems to be split 60 / 40 in favor of the right to protect oneself/bear arms. A lot of people are of the stance that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" which is good.

That is extremely unrealistic. Somebody would get shot, and I don't think anyone wants to volunteer to be shot in the head. Likely after one person went down the crowd would scatter, even if, by some miracle you were able to organize enough people in such a panicky situation to create an angry mob of tech students.

Do you read the entire links you post? The last lines of that article say:

"The Citizens Commission on Human Rights was established by the Church of Scientology to investigate and expose psychiatric violations of human rights."

Not to mention the entire article lacks in scientific verity. It is possible that antidepressants can increase the risk of violence and suicide in susceptible individuals, but it's also likely that individuals prone to violence and suicide would be prescribed these drugs in the first place, so until you can separate correlation from causation it's meaningless.

Well the assault weapons ban has been effective at lowering the prevalence of assault weapons created and distributed within the United States.

Quote:
Q: Does the ban reduce the use of assault weapons in crime?

A: Yes. As more and more assault weapons are confiscated from crime scenes, fewer and fewer criminals and juveniles will have access to these deadly killing machines. And, in fact, there is evidence that the ban has worked.

Gun traces are one of the best measures of gun usage in crime. In 1999, the National Institute of Justice reported that trace requests for assault weapons in the 1993-95 period declined 20% in the first calendar year after the ban took effect, dropping from 4,077 in 1994 to 3,268 in 1995. Over the same time period, gun murders declined only 10% and trace requests for all types of guns declined 11 percent, clearly showing a greater decrease in the number of assault weapons traced in crime.[8]

This same study also reported that the number of assault weapons traced in St. Louis and Boston declined 29% and 24% respectively, as a share of all guns recovered in crime, during late 1995 and into 1996.

In addition, a study by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence (formerly the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence) found that, in Maryland, whose ban on assault pistols took effect in June 1994, the number of assault pistols recovered by Baltimore police in the first six months of 1995 fell by 45 percent from the first six months of 1994.[9]

America is the only nation in the developed world that thinks like this. People kill people with guns. You're not going to get a strangler massacaring 30 people in one go.

If you had tougher gun laws, you'd have less situations like this. Give me an example of any massacre where "right to arms" has helped those being attacked (the most common pro-gun argument - the ability to protect yourself from "evil people"). Students and children don't go around with guns, but maybe some people think they should? How many children and people are going to be shot dead before your nation changes the laws?

(edit) also, people who say that banning guns is pointless as criminals will always be able to get them: making something readily available is simply encouraging the problem. Reduce the availability, reduce the number in circulation, reduce the number of shootings. Fairly self-explanitory to most people non-USA (and Im sure to a lot of Americans too). Also, isnt it morally repulsive that your country legally provides these murderers with their weapons? Your government allowed this man to purchase and use a firearm to do this deed. I say the blood's partly on the hands of the pro-gun lobbyists. if everyone was anti-gun, noone could be said to have encouraged use of guns.

Yes, that way only criminals have guns. Since we cannot get rid of guns... it will not happen, even if they are illegal... the only reasonable solution is to arm everybody...

> People kill people with guns.

... and with knives, and with bats, and with cars, and with glass bottles, and with about anything that can be used as a weapon. A gun makes an effective weapon, but that doesn't mean that people must have a gun in order to kill.

The statement "Guns don't kill, people kill" is accurate. I don't know of a single case where a person was killed, or even shot, by a gun that was not being held by a person or by a machine controlled by a person. Guns are inanimate objects that do not have a mind of their own. The user of the gun is responsible, not the gun itself.

> also, people who say that banning guns is pointless as criminals will always be able to get them

Because it is a true statement. With something like 200 million legal guns in the US (plus however many million illegal guns), you are not going get rid of them any more than you are going to stop people from smoking cannabis. The guns will always be available to those that want them. We have seen the effects of prohibition of drugs on society... the prohibition of guns would create the same kind of black market problems.

> Also, isnt it morally repulsive that your country legally provides these murderers with their weapons?

The US isn't socialist... it is the governments job to protect the people's rights... not to babysit them or take away all the toys with sharp edges. The country did not provide "these murderers" with their weapons. The government does not provide guns to US citizens... though now if I think about it, if they had, then this probably wouldn't have happened... but, getting back on point... The fault lies with the person that pulled the trigger... he made the choice to kill... if it wasn't a gun, it would have been a knife, a car, a bomb, poison, or something else.

> if you had tougher gun laws, you'd have less situations like this.

The problem isn't needing tougher laws, for the most part, but rather the problem is the lack of enforcement on the current laws. Cops are too busy busting drug users to worry about little things like violent crime. (I don't blame the cops; it is the politicians that created the mess.)

> Give me an example of any massacre where "right to arms" has helped those being attacked (the most common pro-gun argument

Fallacious question... if the "right to arms" worked, then there would be no massacre... However, I have not heard of a single massacre where one of the victims was armed.

Nope, better is: People kill; guns make effective weapons.

How the hell is it possible for someone to be able to buy that much ammo? Why does this kind of shooting nuts occur more often in the US than in the rest of the Western world?

After all of the stories I have read about Muslim youths pushing people around on buses and flicking knifes and people dying when they stand up to them (after all, the police certainly aren't around to protect anyone), I could not tolerate an America that put its citizens in that kind of harm. Fuck that! :nonono:

That's crap man! It's true that in many EU cities we have places that are dominated by knife-flicking muslim youths. The fact that the police is quite lenient on this, or doesn't want to come in some neighbourhoods anymore has more to do with the cultus of political correctness from certain socialist regimes than their lack of force.

On the other hand you will not tell me that places like Harlem are so much safer when you carry a gun around! Self-protection my ass, you will likely end up being overpowered and killed.

In the US there are very few restrictions on ammo sales. I used to buy .22 shells, 50 at a time, as a teenager, without any hassle. Of course, this was before the Brady Bill, etc, so things may have changed. However, even a few years ago (well, more than a few now, seven or eight), I bought 500 rounds of Federal Gold Match .308 for my sniper rifle and it was no big deal. The sales guy was surprised I wanted so many rounds, but placed the order for me. I wanted all my rounds to be from the same lot, which is why I bought so many at once.

You sound like a politician! Selective quoting of my arguments! Thats not debate! :crankey:

America has an out of control gun culture. If you made ownership of guns illegal, and people returned their guns (like we did in the UK with knives during the knife amnesty) you'd reduce gun culture.

Will you not admit that these spates of shootings are entirely down to you gun culture? You dont see them in the UK. If you want to stop children and innocents getting shot, you have to take steps, you cant keep blabbing on about how "guns dont shoot themselves", and how you need to protect your own ass. Would you not sacrifice your right to own a gun if it would save other people's lives? Trouble with the US that it is, more than any other country, egocentric, not sociocentric. People put themselves first, not the greater good, moreso than anywhere else in the world.

> If you made ownership of guns illegal, and people returned their guns

Will not happen without a constitutional amendment and that simply will not happen, especially not to something in the US Bill of Rights (1st ten amendments that were passed along with the constitution).  The best that can happen (from a gun control standpoint) is the courts interpreting the 2nd to mean state militias rather than citizens... but the courts have been through this many times, and I don't see a change (nor would I support one).

> Would you not sacrifice your right to own a gun if it would save other people's lives?

Yes, I would, but there is no way to know that if I sacrifice my right to own a gun that it would save other people's lives.  It isn't the people like me that abuse the right to own a gun.  The criminals that are going to use guns for violence are not going to give up their weapons.  Why create a society where only criminals can carry weapons?

> Trouble with the US that it is, more than any other country, egocentric, not sociocentric.

Right...

I do agree that most European countries are typically more 'mature' than the US, especially when it comes to things like capital punishment... but people are people regardless of where you live... and European countries are just as guilty as the US or any other country in the world for looking out for their own first.

There is media bias against guns!

"The Bias Against Guns: Why Almost Everything You've Heard About Gun Control is Wrong - By John R. Lott, Jr. (Regnery)

Disarming America
A review of The Bias Against Guns: Why Almost Everything You've Heard About Gun Control is Wrong, by John R. Lott, Jr.
By Joseph Bessette
Posted August 27, 2003

This review appeared in the Fall 2003 issue of the Claremont Review of Books. Click here to send a comment.

In January 2002, a former student of Appalachian Law School in Virginia, who had flunked out the year before, returned to discuss his academic suspension. Unable to achieve reinstatement, he went into the office of the school's dean and shot him fatally with a .380 semiautomatic handgun from point-blank range. He then did the same to one of the school's professors. On his way out he shot four female students, killing one and wounding the others in the abdomen, the throat, and the chest. The carnage ended, according to nearly all the news accounts, when several students tackled the offender as he exited the building. According to John Lott, however, 204 of 208 news stories on the incident somehow failed to mention a telling fact about the offender's apprehension: two male students ran to their cars to get their guns, and by brandishing one at him forced the killer to drop his weapon. Then they tackled him.

The reporters (and perhaps their editors) failed to mention this dramatic use of guns for self-defense despite the fact that one of the student heroes had explained in detail, to more than 50 reporters, how he and his friend had ended the rampage. When Lott called the Washington Post to find out why its story hadn't mentioned the guns, the reporter, who had written only of the students "pouncing" on the offender, confirmed that both the armed students had told her the same story but that she didn't focus on the "details" of the incident; also, "space constraints" were a factor. Even more striking, the Associated Press media relations manager, while denying any intention to downplay the defensive use of guns, expressed his shock at the students' actions. As he told the Kansas City Star, "I thought, my God, they're putting into jeopardy even more people by bringing out these guns."

If the American people don't realize how often guns are used for self-defense, they are hardly to blame; the media, especially the national media, don't often tell them. Lott offers another example. Five years before the attack at Appalachian Law School, 16-year-old Luke Woodham made national headlines when, after stabbing his mother to death at home, he took a rifle to his high school in Pearl, Mississippi, and shot nine of his classmates, killing two, including his girlfriend. Scarcely reported at the time was that an assistant principal apprehended Woodham only after running to his pickup to retrieve his .45 caliber pistol (parked far enough from the school to avoid violating the 1,000 foot "gun-free zone" (required by federal law). "I had my pistol's sights on him," the school official explained later. He ordered Woodham to lie on the ground: "I put my foot on his back area and pointed my pistol at him."

I am a law abiding citizen (except stupid drug laws), and I would NEVER give up my right to bear arms. In the future, I plan on carrying a concealed weapon... when I move to a state that allows this.

The right to bear arms is important. Giving up your guns allows the government to do anything they want without fear of uprising. The US gun laws have been eroding away our ability to protect ourselves, from crazy korean students AND our government.

Armed rebellion is a reality, even in our magical country of milk and honey... We started as an armed rebellion for fuck's sake.

Gun laws only protect criminals, becasue by definition CRIMINALS DO NOT OBEY LAWS! Children in America should be educated on guns from an early age, and at 18 should have the option to own one, just like a car. Cars kill more people than guns, and they are a pretty commonplace and socially accepted "risk" that anyone has the right to own.

If ONE person on that campus had a concealed handgun, proper training and enough bravery, there would have been no massacre... Only a crazy animal put down by a helpful citizen of the USA.

BTW, in my youth I was all for gun control because I used the same flawed logic as most of you from the UK... No guns, no problems. But it doesn't work that way, and we fled YOUR country long ago in order to have that right...

There are countless stories, feel free to use Google... "Tougher" gun laws are not necessary, and its revealing that you would use such a term. More regulation might be in order, but to deny individuals the right to bear arms in America is not right.

Maybe the rest of the world does not understand this because the rest of the world is so used to monarchies and being slaves to others.

How many children and people are going to be shot dead before your nation changes the laws?

Put on your thinking cap for a moment. Incidents such as this one are extremely rare. The type of people who commit these acts are fucked in the head. Changing a law is not going to have any effect on these fucking nuts going around and killing people. By making guns illegal, you are simply making criminals of the vast majority of gun-owners that are responsible and use them for valid reasons.

Quote:
(edit) also, people who say that banning guns is pointless as criminals will always be able to get them: making something readily available is simply encouraging the problem.

Guns are not "readily available". Perhaps we could take more steps in regulation to more effectively screen it out, but what you fail to understand is that you cannot obstruct the right of the American people to own guns. I mean, you have fucking nuts that will hiijack an airplane and kill people with it - are we going to take away airplanes now?

Reduce the availability, reduce the number in circulation, reduce the number of shootings.

You forgot about the millions of people that have a right to own guns, who use them for valid reasons. Your approach is not realistic in America, at least (the other countries in the world can be as stupid as they like). One could say with the same line of reasoning that by reducing the availability of cars, we subsequently reduce the number of car accidents. It isn't a reasonable statement to make.

Quote:
Also, isnt it morally repulsive that your country legally provides these murderers with their weapons? Your government allowed this man to purchase and use a firearm to do this deed.

No, it isn't. His actions were his own. In America, we don't appreciate it when our rights as Americans are taken away because of the actions of a few. England is used to having a monarchy that controls their lives and makes their decisions for them - well, guess what, America said fuck that. :smirk:

Quote:
I say the blood's partly on the hands of the pro-gun lobbyists. if everyone was anti-gun, noone could be said to have encouraged use of guns.

Yeah, now if we can only get everyone to be anti-drug as well, then there would be no usage of drugs! :nonono:

I say the blood is in the hands of the individual who committed the act. The act was unfortunate, but its reality. Maybe some people just have a difficult time dealing with reality and feel the need to look for ways to control other people's lives.

I read an article about world opinion regarding the incident and how we need more gun control. Oh what, is the rest of the world going to spank us? Take away our toys? You've been bad, America, bad!

COLUMN: Law school, guns, and a media bias

By James Eaves-Johnson

The Daily Iowan (U. Iowa)
01/24/2002

COLUMN: Law school, guns, and a media bias

(U-WIRE) IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Last week, a disgruntled student at Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Va., went on a shooting spree. Peter Odighizuwa tragically shot six people, killing Dean Anthony Sutin, Associate Professor Thomas Blackwell, and student Angela Dales.
Most news reports pointed out that the situation ended when several students "confronted," "tackled," or "intervened." However, Tracy Bridges, Ted Besen, Todd Ross, and Mikael Gross did not merely "confront" Odighizuwa. Bridges and Gross separately ran to their cars to get their handguns once the shooting began. Bridges approached Odighizuwa with Besen's and Ross' aid. Gross was close behind. According to Bridges, "I aimed my gun at him, and Peter tossed his gun down." Bridges, Besen, and Gross had previously received police or military training.

Unfortunately, the media did not point out that the "intervening" students were armed. A Lexis-Nexis search revealed 88 stories on the topic, of which only two mentioned that either Bridges or Gross were armed. A Westnews search exposed worse results. It revealed 112 stories, of which only two mentioned the armed students.

With media bias like this, it is no wonder that people fail to see the benefits of gun ownership. This was a very public shooting with a lot of media coverage. Even here, reporters rarely presented the positive side of firearms. Instead, they preferred to default to the politically correct story portraying guns as something only the bad guy uses.

Of course, this media bias is not unprecedented. A more thorough Lexis-Nexis search by a Yale researcher revealed 687 articles on the school shooting in Pearl, Miss. Of those, only 19 mentioned that Assistant Principal Joel Myrick retrieved a gun from his car and stopped the shooters four-and-a-half minutes before police arrived.

Few will remember that an armed guard helped many students at Columbine escape and was thwarted only when shooters began using explosives. Fewer still will remember that a restaurant owner who was hosting a school dance for students in Edinboro, Pa., stopped a student shooter 11 minutes before police could arrive.

Our my

Few will remember that an armed guard helped many students at Columbine escape and was thwarted only when shooters began using explosives. Fewer still will remember that a restaurant owner who was hosting a school dance for students in Edinboro, Pa., stopped a student shooter 11 minutes before police could arrive.

Our myopic view of guns leads too many of us to believe that if we disarm people, we will be safer. Unfortunately, mandatory disarmament only disarms those who are interested in obeying the law. Laws against gun ownership and possession are ineffective against those who would do us harm.

No one would believe that people in Iowa City don't smoke marijuana or that underage college students don't find ways to procure alcohol. Why should we be any more naïve when it comes to rules against firearms?

I was unable to discover Appalachian School of Law's weapons policy, but if it is like almost every other law school in the country, it probably prohibits students from possessing guns on campus. That is probably why Bridges and Gross did not have their guns on their persons. Imagine what these men might have prevented if they could have responded immediately, guns in hand.

Unfortunately, at the University of Iowa, we are more defenseless. The university prohibits the possession of firearms. At our law school, as on most of the campus, people would be unable to run to their cars to fetch their guns, as the only available nearby parking is on university property.

Even worse, our Public Safety officers would be unable to protect us. Only last week did the state of Iowa Board of Regents decide to arm Public Safety officers with air Tasers. Most Tasers are ineffective at more than 21 feet, and they can be defeated with a heavy coat. The UI officers are trained to use firearms, like ordinary police officers, and they have the authority to do almost everything an Iowa City police officer does.

The university should allow responsible individuals with defensive firearms training to carry arms on campus. That begins with the officers who are responsible for our safety. Right now, we are at the mercy of any thug willing to come on campus with a gun. Many would be murdered before Iowa City police could arrive. The presence of responsible armed individuals on campus could reduce or prevent the harm done by a thug. Just over 10 years ago, the UI was visited by such a thug. We are just as defenseless

Guns were in fact outlawed on campus. Anybody who thinks that outlawing guns will eliminate guns is a blithering idiot of almost criminal moronity. How's that working out vis a vis drugs? You having any problem getting high?

In general, one does have to wonder why, amongst the hundreds of students and professors, not one had the temerity to take matters into his own hands and do something to thwart this psych. I cannot fault any single individual but I can express a general disgust with the whole "It's not my job" ethos that seems to have permeated academia and children in general that led to absolutely NOBODY doing anything at all. I am mostly disgusted with the professors, who were probably damn near first out the window. I know hind sight is bullshit, but fuck, hide behind the door, let him half way in and then slam him with the door. Everybody else rush him.

I cannot at all fault any specific individual but the fact that no individuals stepped up, out of a pool of hundreds, is disheartening and a symptom of the liberal mindset. No one was able to be proactive and take matters into his own hands.

No, but he could have emptied a few five gallon jugs of petrol on the ground floor and tossed a match. My guess is that the death toll would have been much higher. If a person is determined to perform mass murder, access to guns is not needed, as they will find a way to perform mass murder. Instead of the classroom, perhaps he would have raged against the people at the mall, seeing how many people he could run over.

1927 -- US: Bath, Michigan School Disaster.

Andrew Kehoe, seeking revenge against the community for taxes imposed on his farm to pay for a new school, set off a TNT bomb in the school, killing 43 people, including 39 grade-school children. After the explosion, Kehoe killed his wife, then drove his truck back, loaded with dynamite & nails, to the school, & set it off, killing himself & the school superintendent.

He didn't need guns.

The difference being that the folks on Flight 93 knew they were dead if they didn't do something. They had no choice of flight or fight... the flight part had been taken away from them. With the school shootings, the folks in the classroom had to decide between fight or flight...

It is easy to sit back and pretend how brave we are, but until we are in a situation that tests us, we really don't know how we will react.

My understanding is the doors were chained shut so the flight option was gone for those in the classroom as well.

How many realized this is unknown but I would have hoped at least some would have risked their lives to rush the gunmen. This guy was just walking up to people and firing point blank at their heads. However I am not blaming those who did not do so. Self-preservation instinct usually takes over in situations like this.

Yes, but the people in the classrooms didn't know that... guy comes in, shoots, leaves... do we risk our lives to go fight him out in the hall, or do we hide/play dead and hope he is done? Not being there, I don't know how I would have reacted.

When you are on a hijacked plane, and people on the cell phones have been telling you that hijacked planes are being used as guided bombs... you know that you're going to die if you don't do something.

Had the people in the classrooms known that they would all die if they didn't act, then you would have a fair comparison.

From what I understand he did not leave the second shooting location where most people were killed. He offed himself.

And I do not think we know at this point how many were aware of the door being chained shut.

I do not know how I would have reacted either but I would like to think I or someone else could have presented some sort of counter attack as opposed to him nonchalantly walking up and shooting me or someone else in the head. He had to have reloaded at some point.

None of us can pretend to know the circumstances of the situation. Isn't it possible that he reloaded one gun at a time while keeping his other within easy reach in the case of an offensive action? From what I read it sounds like he was systematically executing people. Maybe he was too well prepared defensively, I find it hard to believe that nobody would have done anything HAD there been an opportunity to gain the upper hand.

I just now read something interesting about one of the victims- a 77 year-old professor who was killed while holding off the shooter so his students could escape out the window. He was a Holocaust survivor.

Imagine surviving all that to be gunned down years later in a classroom.

Having faced death routinely in his formative years he was uniquely prepared to play a heroic role in this tragic play.

I read that and was instantly filled with admiration for that man. To give his life for a bunch of shitty students. I know I have never had a professor that would care enough to risk their life for their students.

My first thought after hearing that it went on for 3 hours before the guy shot himself in the face was also, "Why didn't anybody stop him sooner?"

However, I was thinking more along the lines of the image I saw of dozens of police and SWAT teams standing around outside hiding behind their cars and trucks for hours.

I thought SWAT teams were trained to go into buildings where psychos were shooting people up with guns, and take them out.

Were they all to busy digesting donuts or in sugar comas through it all or what?

I haven't been watching much of the coverage at all. Of anyone who has been, has there been ANY mention of what the SWAT teams outside were doing/not doing over the course of hours?

This is all I found- SWAT team members with helmets, flak jackets and assault rifles were seen swarming all over the campus.

I just sent off a ridiculous tax check to pay for more government incompetence and waste.

So, we pay for SWAT with our taxes to swarm around the danger, but not to go into the danger and take out the cause of the danger.......I see :bored:

A swarm of bees is harmless until they start stinging the shit out of you. Kids came out after the first shooting and were able to describe the guy with the gun and where he was in which building. 2 hours went by before the second round of shooting occurred. SWAT trains for and gets paid for this sort of stuff.

Well, I wanted to throw them into the mix since nobody else mentioned why they were useless in this situation.

Same with Columbine. Not a police officer or SWAT team entered that school building either.

Can anyone explain to me the strategy of hiding outside and waiting for the shooter to come out to put massacres happening inside of buildings to a stop?

Did they run out of tear gas to throw into the building first and loose their gas masks playing poker? They could've done at least that  if they were to chicken shit to go in without tear gas even.

Nothing wrong with tech students being chicken shit in such a situation. Something is wrong with chicken shit SWAT teams though.

We all know it will happen again. This country needs a better solution then SWAT.

Oh come on, don't milk it! It is an established fact that in Europe there is generally less gun crime that in the US. Less doesn't mean none.

Also your American freedom is a mere pipedream. Except for gun ownership with is traditionally rooted in American culture, there is not much more freedom there than in Europe, in many cases even less so. Your little joke by comparing UK monarchy to USA freedom is quite dated too, as you may remember we don't live in the year 1776 anymore, today's date is 04/18/2007 and many things have changed since then.

1) Every law abiding citizen turns in guns
2) Criminals dont turn in guns

I think you are right that it would be unrealistic to simply expect all criminals to hand over their guns.

However I think as venues by which to purchase guns are increasingly shut-down and illegally held guns are confiscated, the prevalence of guns will likely decrease.

The only way guns are going away is if you make some sort of machine that instantly removes all guns from the planet.

Id be all for the creation of that machine, if guns didnt exist, then I wouldnt want one. But that isnt the case...guns do exist. You could stop selling guns today and there would still be tons of them out there, and they would remain out there in use for decades to come.

I understand wanting the dream world where there are no weapons, but its nothing but that...a dream world. Maybe when we die we can go to a place like that, but in this world, this reality...there are guns and its might right to have one to defend myself with.

Well what you are saying might be true, however a ban seems to have worked on assault weapons without any instant removal machinery.

Of course that is the case some of the time. Im certain the % of criminals carrying guns in countries where guns are controlled is lower than the % in the US.

You cant really argue with the facts that countries with gun control have a lot less violent crime and are generally safer places to live for the people who live there.

It depends on the situation. Generally I think provoking an already violent and oppressive government will simply lead to an increasingly violent and oppressive government. That is why peaceful reform is often times a far more practical solution.

Besides the Civil War, in which case civilian vs. military technology was far more equal then it is today, has there really been a successful civil war in any first world nation? I don't really like the idea of my neighborhood being blown to bits by tanks just because someone wants to prove how macho they are.

Facts about the Great UK UTOPIA

One in three criminals under the age of 25 owns or has access to a firearm, the Government's researchers have discovered. A continuing parliamentary inquiry into the growing number of black market weapons has concluded that there are more than three million illegally held firearms in circulation - double the number believed to have been held 10 years ago - and that criminals are more willing than ever to use them."

"gun crime is so bad in Nottingham that the city has been dubbed "Assassination City" -- you don't get a nickname like that for nothing!"

Nottingham Chief Constable, Steve Green: can't cope with all the murders in Nottingham.

Not so long ago, Nottingham was a decent city, not at all notorious for violent crime or crime in general. In recent years however, Nottingham has become notorious for out-of-control violent crime, gun crime, and hard-drug dealing; in fact, gun crime is so bad in Nottingham that the city has been dubbed "Assassination City" -- you don't get a nickname like that for nothing! The first thing any criminal in Nottingham (or in any part of Britain) does is to "tool up", which is why so many criminals in Nottingham, no matter how low-level, are carrying at least one. Such is the widespread availability of guns in Nottingham (and in Britain in general for that matter) that police often find young children carrying loaded guns. All this means that drug-dealing criminals, armed to the teeth, now control large parts of Nottingham, with the law-abiding public at their mercy.

likewise, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool all suffer from widespread gun violence."

Why Britain needs more guns

Violent crime in America has been plummeting for 10 consecutive years, even as British violence has been rising. By 1995 English rates of violent crime were already far higher than America's for every major violent crime except murder and rape.

When guns were available in England they were seldom used in crime. A government study for 1890-1892 found an average of one handgun homicide a year in a population of 30 million. But murder rates for both countries are now changing. In 1981 the American rate was 8.7 times the English rate, in 1995 it was 5.7 times the English rate, and by last year it was 3.5 times. With American rates described as "in startling free-fall" and British rates as of October 2002 the highest for 100 years the two are on a path to converge.

Thanks for posting that lonestar.

Its amazing how people see the results of the action and focus on preventing the person perpetrating that action by prohibiting the tool that they used to commit the action, instead of focusing on the circumstances that brought the individual to initiate the action.

The tool that they choose to use is entirely incidental. There are numerous other ways that the individual could have massacred large amounts of people at the school. Simply lighting a match at an exposed gas line could do it, for example.

Its sort of like pointing at the moon - some people only see the finger. Then they want to take away your freedom to have a finger.

You are comparing the United States to third world countries. -_-

Regardless of what laws are in place it should be obvious that most of those listed nations have no means to enforce such laws. Especially in Russia, where 40% of the economy is Mafia controlled, and in Columbia, where Marxist-Leninist groups have created a civil war.

I'm not sure whether or not you misrepresented the article on purpose, but it does imply that the reason for the growth in such crimes is Britain's growing gun culture:

Excerpts from the article:

"Government research shows use of guns is on the rise and gangster films are blamed for making it seem 'cool'
"

"A continuing parliamentary inquiry into the growing number of black market weapons has concluded that there are more than three million illegally held firearms in circulation - double the number believed to have been held 10 years ago - and that criminals are more willing than ever to use them.

The events of the past week have provided sobering evidence of how deeply ingrained Britain's new gun culture has become. "

"Lee Jasper, who advises the London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, on matters of race and policing, believes that, whereas guns were once reserved for the criminal élite, they are increasingly falling into the hands of younger, less experienced criminals.

'We have a culture developed where people think it is very cool to carry a gun, and are prepared to use it at the drop of a hat. The crime has moved on from just protecting your market and your market share to doling out punishment and intimidation. And the gun is the first resort - the weapon of choice - for settling arguments.' "

Likely the initial panic of this is likely due to the fact that law enforcement in Britain is not used to dealing with gun culture and gun violence. As soon as the government has a better understanding of the issue they will probably be able to control the problem more effectively.

That's an unfair comparison because the United States started with a higher crime rate then Britain. It would be like noting that Japan's crime rate jumped from 1% to 2%, and saying based on this trend the United State's law enforcement system is superior to Japan's because while the United State's crime rate has been declining, Japan's crime rate has doubled.

Three points:

1- How common were hand guns in the 1890s? I'm not sure, but I believe around that time the technology was relatively new.

2- You are comparing hand gun crimes in the 1890s to general murder rates in the 20th century, those are two different issues nearly a century apart.

3- The United State's crime rate is still 3.5 times higher then Britain--how do you conclude from this that the United State's has a better method of preventing crime?

I think it is obvious given the context that I was referring to civilians. Of course groups needed for legal enforcement or national protection, like the police and the military, need guns to do their job.

It's the equivalent of me saying "There is no need for a person to own a nuclear weapon" with regards to an issue of whether or not nuclear weapons should be privately owned.

I mean, I suppose some people could respond by saying that "nuclear weapons don't kill people, people kill people." You could also note that nuclear weapons are needed by the military to do their jobs. And I suppose some could even argue that nuclear weapons would be essential in order to fight an oppressive government. (If you really wanted to be creative I suppose you could also note that nations without nuclear weapons are more likely to engage in war and mass killings then nations that have nuclear weapons).

Still, I would say there is no legitimate reason to own a nuclear bomb, and I would hope you understood what I meant by that.

America is the only nation in the developed world that thinks like this. People kill people with guns. You're not going to get a strangler massacaring 30 people in one go.
You're also not going to be able to take down a deer with a knife.

Sorry what? A knife is not a weapon you can massacre 30 members of the public with in one go, unless they are very pathetic people. A gun is such a weapon.

Non-argument. An aeroplane's primary purpose is transportation, a gun's only purpose is to threaten/wound/kill. You're smarter than that
Guns are readily available! As I understand it, you dont have to have any documentation to purchase a firearm in America, in most states at least. As long as you are old enough, thats enough. You have no way of tracking someone that bought a gun if you later find out they might be a threat to public safety. Thats as nuts as the psychos themselves.

Quote:
Reduce the availability, reduce the number in circulation, reduce the number of shootings.
You forgot about the millions of people that have a right to own guns, who use them for valid reasons. Your approach is not realistic in America, at least (the other countries in the world can be as stupid as they like). One could say with the same line of reasoning that by reducing the availability of cars, we subsequently reduce the number of car accidents. It isn't a reasonable statement to make.

Thats my point. IMO a reasonably-minded populace would give up on their right to own a gun in order to prevent massares like this. Thats what we did in the UK after Dunblane. Also, cars, planes, they're for transport, remember...

:smirk:

Im Scottish, not English. The monarchy has no power at all! The Queen has no influcence on our lives or our decision, that all stopped a very long time ago. Id say your goverment is slightly more fucked up than ours. We win  "In America, we don't appreciate it when our rights as Americans are taken away because of the actions of a few." Thats what I said in my post. You are unwilling to make personal sacrifices for the greater good.

It is down to the progun lobbyists that your gun laws are as lax as they are. Therefore they are partly responsible for situations arising from your lax laws.
"The act was unfortunate, but its reality". I just find it sad that a nation is not willing to take steps to change its reality in order to prevent such "unfortunate acts" occuring again.

. We are discussing a massacre. Gun use in the UK is crime-based. One criminal using a gun against another criminal. Of course criminals are always going to have black market guns. Psycho nuts people who are going to conduct random massacres are not part of the criminal underworld, they're mental socially-excluded loners who have no contact with organised-crime. Thus in the UK they would have an immeasurably harder time getting hold of a weapon than in the US, where they could walk into a store and buy one.

Like I said those are third world nations. Even if they have laws there it doesn't matter, because they can't enforce them.

Switzerland also has virtually no poverty and a series of heavily funded social programs. Hence comparing prevalent gun ownership in Switzerland to gun ownership in Russia, is like comparing prevalent gun ownership in a wealthy neighborhood like Beverly Hills to prevalent gun ownership in South Central LA. Distribute guns in both places and you are going to see some very different results.

Robbyberto has an excellent suggestion. This thread was started in an attempt to lay the blame for the actions of a seriously disturbed individual at the feet of Conservatives. If anyone wishes to argue against that point of view, this is the thread in which to do it.

Those who wish to use the VA Tech massacre to instead argue the merits (or lack thereof) of stricter gun control laws in the US should make their contributions in wilshire's companion thread, found here -- http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6795149/an/0/page/0

Don't you think gun prevalence can be seen as a cause of gun violence, and that being the case can't one say conservatives are responsible in the sense that by campaigning against gun control they maintain gun prevalence?

That's a pretty tangential connection at best when one considers the fact that American citizens have been armed since the beginning of the nation -- a nation whose legislators have been majority Liberal as often as they have been majority Conservative.

Annapurna1 went to the trouble of starting a thread to advance a specific premise -- that instead of being the work of psychopaths, spree killings in the US are carried out by ordinary people who have suffered repeated humiliation, bullying and inhumane conditions that find their origins in the "Reagan Revolution." (How this addresses spree killers operating prior to Reagan's election is not made clear, but what the heck) Apparently, she finds merit in Professor Ames's attempt to recast these rage killings as, essentially, failed slave rebellions.

She further opines that the inescapable conclusion is that the conservative social engineers have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in creating an atomized society of socially powerless individuals who in the past would have organized themselves into unions or similar groups to address shared grievances, but since this kind of organization is no longer possible (presumably because of Conservative actions making the organization of unions impossible) the only option left to violent losers who can't join a union or other similar group is to go on a killing spree.

Discussing the murder rate in Switzerland and the US and the UK does nothing to address these bold assertions. Discussing the efficacy (or lack thereof) of gun control legislation in disarming the violent does nothing to address these bold asserions either.

That is why I say wilshire's companion thread is the proper venue in which to argue gun control.

Do you wish to address Annapurna1's theory? If so, this is the thread in which to do it. If not, I suggest again you check out wilshire's thread.

I think you may be equating Liberal with Democrats, which I don't believe is accurate because although roughly half the nation may identify themselves as "Democrat", slightly more then a fifth identify themselves as liberal:

Twice as Many Americans Conservative as Liberal

For the last 100 years since Gallup began taking the poll Liberals are almost always outnumbered by conservatives by nearly 2 to 1. If you equate being moderate with being "right-wing" or closet conservative as I tend to, the number jumps to 4-1. Saying liberals control half of Congress is a gross exaggeration.

I think some of Annapurna's statements are overly speculative. Largely because the rate of school shootings is still extremely low. You are more likely to be hit by lightning, even as a student, then you are to be shot in a school shooting.

Of course it may still be wise to have lightning rods, just as it may be wise to outlaw guns if you wish to reduce the risk of both scenarios (though there is less evidence for the efficacy of lightning rods then gun control).

Apparently gun crimes were on the rise in London England in 2001. One would assume it has only gotten worse since this article was posted.

Quote:
Gun crime in London is increasing so rapidly that police fear they may not have the resources to cope, the BBC has learned.

Members of the Metropolitan Police's SO19 firearms unit say lack of staff, money and out-of-date equipment is threatening to affect their work.

The BBC's Zubeida Malik says that at a meeting this week, officers reported there had been a 100% increase in firearms-related crime in the capital this year.

This follows the publication of Home Office figures last month which showed that violent crime in England and Wales was continuing to rise.

These criminals out there are very well equipped

SO19 officer

The London Borough of Lambeth had the highest rate of robberies.

The borough was the focus of attention just over two weeks ago when police shot dead 29-year-old Derek Bennett - he was brandishing a gun-shaped cigarette lighter.

Officers serving in SO19 told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that recruitment to the unit had dropped dramatically, and that the pressures of the job were taking a toll on members.

The firearms unit deals with between 20 and 30 incidents a day.

Formidable arsenals

Its members say they deal with criminals whose weapons are more sophisticated than theirs, and who even wear body armour.

Scotland Yard said this week than police in London may be issued with electric stun guns to defend themselves from violent criminals.

The "taser" gun, which uses an electrical shock to cause temporarily paralysis, could be introduced by the end of the year.

One SO19 officer told Today that when he joined the unit in 1995 there had been 750 applications, compared with just 120 last year.

He said the unit needed more money to cope with the rise in violent crime.

I think we're coping at the moment, but we mustn't be complacent

SO19 officer
"We need more personnel in the long term if we're going to keep up with things, but that's again a difficult matter, because of the fact we're not getting the people that want to join the department as we used to," he said

"We must keep up-to-date with our equipment, and I don't mean just firearms, but the equipment we use in other instances, for example opening doors, all sorts of things.

"If we're going to fight crime in London, and believe me, these criminals out there are very well equipped themselves, we need to be one step ahead.

"I think we're coping at the moment, but we mustn't be complacent.

"I would hate to think that we haven't got the correct resources and enough resources to deal with that crime that's going on there, because at the end of the day the buck stops with SO19 - there is no one else to deal with the gun crime in London."

'Instil confidence'

Lord Mackenzie, former head of the Police Superintendents' Association, told the Today programme that the number of armed police should be increased to deal with the rise in gun-related crime.

He added that officers needed to be "given confidence" to use firearms.

"We pride ourselves in being unarmed but what we've got to do, obviously, is to give our officers the best training, the best equipment, and of course give them confidence," he said.

All this means that drug-dealing criminals, armed to the teeth, now control large parts of Nottingham, with the law-abiding public at their mercy.

likewise, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool all suffer from widespread gun violence."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4344595.stm

Fun fact:

There are 169 known gangs in London alone:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/6383933.stm

Quote:
Police identify 169 London gangs
A police report on London's gang culture has identified 169 separate groups, with more than a quarter said to have been involved in murders.

Gangs are responsible for more than a fifth of youth crime in London, according to the Metropolitan Police report seen by BBC London.

The unpublished report found that nearly half of London gangs had been involved in serious assault.

Three teenagers have died in shootings in south London in two weeks.

The largest number of gangs are said to be in Hackney, east London (22 gangs); Enfield in north London (13); Lambeth and Merton in south London (12 gangs each); Waltham Forest in north east London (11) and Brent in north west London (11).

Gangs were found to have around 20 to 30 members, and to commit crimes in smaller groups of three to six.

It's definitely a war out there
Former gang leader

African-Caribbean gangs were described as the largest group, followed by south Asian and white gangs.

Religion was also found to be a defining factor, with some gangs comprising solely Muslim or Catholic members, for example.

The report distinguished between 19 gangs considered responsible for a high level of harm and 29 regarded as using a medium level.

A former gang leader said some young people became gang members in order to feel protected.

"They feel safe within a gang because you have got older people in the gang who are always going to look after you," he said.

"You are always moving as a pack. It's as you fight in a war.

"If you are fighting in a war you are not going to send just one soldier out. It's definitely a war out there."

Impact 'enormous'

Criminologist Dr John Pitts, from the University of Bedfordshire, said: "There are probably no more than 1,500 to 2,000 young people in gangs in all of London, but their impact is enormous."

Dr Pitts said the influence of gangs could determine which schools and colleges young people felt able to go to.

"There are quite a number of youth workers in London boroughs who are finding it impossible to run a service," he added.

Fifteen-year-old Billy Cox is the latest victim of violence blamed on gangs.

There does seem to be evidence of a rise in the number of gangs
Metropolitan Police Commander Paul Minton

He was shot in the chest at the family home in Clapham, south London.

Metropolitan Police Commander Paul Minton said: "There does seem to be evidence of a rise in the number of gangs and there seems to be an increase in the number of young people involved."

However, he said the south London community had been "reaping the effects" of increased police activity and armed patrols in the area in the wake of the recent shootings.

"The series of incidents that have occurred in south London have been unprecedented in our experience," he said.

"As a consequence we are doing a great deal to ensure we are tackling the criminality that is occurring there."

I don't have time right now to read any more of this thread beyond this quote, but I simply must reply to this statement here.

If the victims are as placid with the fact that someone was using a gun to fire at everyone, then if guns were prohibited and virtually nonexistant, they would be just as placid with a knife. I think that the victims fear of the fact that someone was using a gun prevented them from initiating action that could have saved themselves or at least others.

This wasn't some mass-murderer: it was simply some angry, confused, isolated kid trying to be tough, and he killed so many people because they were simply fish in a bucket.

Do you think that if some of those students carried concealed weapons, through abiding by regulations of the federal government, subject to stringent skill tests and behavior requirements (infractions resulting in the revoking of the right), they would fear the punk kid with his guns? No, because they would be trained to protect society.

I think people are willing to assume the responsibility to be responsible for themselves and the others around them. Its the reason we have firefighters and police and emergency health technicians. The notion that guns should be prohibited is ignorant of reality.

No, it isn't. His actions were his own. In America, we don't appreciate it when our rights as Americans are taken away because of the actions of a few. as I have said earlier, a surprising amount of people across the ocean seem to think that we're still living in 1776 and Europe is still reigned by the aristocracy in a feodalist system. The US isn't the center of the world, and in Europe we actually have -apart from US liberal gun laws- much more freedoms than they have.

Also, the "we saved your asses" stuff --> we are grateful for helping us winning the second world war. Especially since my country was occupied for 5 years. Yet don't take all the credit, the Allied Forces consisted of the USA, Canada, UK and  USSR. If you have some clue about the strategy that was applied after 1943, you'll see that it was only possible when forces were joined. Even if this meant for Churchill that he eventually had to sacrifice the Empire. but this is off-topic...

re: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_percap-crime-murders-per-capita

The only EU countries that have more murders than the US are: Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Poland. Not surprisingly, all relatively poor Eastern european countries that border to Russia, where crime rates and mafia flourish and law enforcement is too weak and often corrupt.

USA is #24 with 0.042802 murders per 1,000 people. Western European countries are all much further down the line. Seems to me that gun control laws work for the EU.

If you guys want to keep your constitutional right to bear arms, it's your choice. Who am I to meddle in your affairs. However history has proven well that it does practically nothing to reduce crime rates.
And please, a war doesn't count here -soldiers carry guns- so don't come again with that pathetic "we saved you from nazis with guns" bullshit. We're not in kintergarden here.
