Shocked awake after tripping

I've noticed that if I trip at night and try to fall asleep after the trip has worn off, when I get to the line between being asleep and awake, an "electric shock" happens in my brain and I'm jolted awake. It's really weird and slightly concerning. It persists for 2-3 hours.
Any ideas on the reason for this and what I might do to prevent/alleviate it?

You could try smoking some pot before bedtime, that usually makes me sleepy.

I always take Vitamin B before i go to sleep after tripping and Vitamin C when i wake up...its more to replenish those nutrients in my body, but I always do this and have never ahd this "shokc feeling".
I can never sleep when tripping, but have no problems once i come down.

this "electric shock" has never happened to me on shrooms, but does happen often on other substances.
maybe it could be that there is so much brain activity going on that it just sends huge electric pulses through your body. that's how it feels to me. i can actually feel something like an electric build up in my brain and then a huge jolt of 'electricity' going through my body to my feet and back to my brain which makes a huge body twitch.

I've had that happen on many occasions before I ever used drugs. Typically it takes the form of an electric shock (accompanied by a visual and / or audio flash), or I feel a sudden sensation of tripping over an unexpected step.
I've seen this phenomenon documented somewhere and there is a name for it. In short, it's perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about.

ive had that happen before.
I think its because since your still semi under the influence of the drug your brain is still in a semi alert state so a stimulus recieved by you produces a stroger reaction to it because of the fact that your in that dreamy quasi sleep state.
it never bothered me much

I have a pretty crazy story about that actually.
I like listening to the grand complexity of audio visuals that are granted to me during a trip. Mainly lsd and lsa. Some people dont hear them. They have just as much depth and order as a mandala of pure geometric visual complexity.
I once slipped into a trance while listening in the dark. I fell half asleep to this body of sounds. I woke up startled and still half asleep to a terrible shock. It was the heart of the audiovisuals for a part of a second. I then realized that I was there for a while, and its loudness, speed and complexity is what woke me up from this sleep like state.
It was like the beginning of the fractal that is audio hallucinations. All the fractals products were present, and thus it was the loudest thing I have ever heard in my life.
I did alot of thinking about it that night. It was truely amazing.
Sounded like 1,000,000 tv and computer screens turning on all at once(but much more complex). It made my body freak out for a second as if I was being scared by a friend hidding somewhere.
It actually was pretty amazing since I knew what it was, and where it came from.

the electric shock is just the brain recoiling from its experience, nothing to worry about, just over activity

i dont believe it is a "rare syndrome", or some kind of deficiency in the brain. what wikipedia describes is not the case in my experience. and this seems to happen to many people.
a normal sleep not under the influence involves A LOT of brain activity. there is A LOT of brain activity going on when you are tripping. i think that the combined activity in the brain from tripping and the first stage of sleep gets so high that an actual jolt of electric brain currents fly through your body making you "shock awake". seems logical? i can't find any facts on this.

This is a thoroughly unpleasant experience that is more commonly associated with the abuse of Ecstasy. I have not heard of it occuring with mushrooms, so this is an interesting post.
I don't have the scientific explanation, but it essentially has to do with the serotonin system which is heavily affected by MDMA and to a lesser extent by mushrooms. As I understand from reading at thedea.org, the serotonin system shuts down during sleep, and it can be during that transition period between waking and sleep that some really fucked up things can happen after using certain drugs.
I haven't used "true" psychedelics in almost a year, but for a long time after a period of fairly heavy mushroom usage, things would be really trippy and weird when I awoke unexpectedly or when I was falling asleep.
I've only experienced two brain zap episodes after an overly enthusiastic dose of MDMA, but it's certainly scary. The worst part is that you lay there anxious that it will happen again if you try to go back to sleep.

I know exactly what you mean. After a very large dose of acid I couldn't get to sleep and experienced it. Everytime I tried it felt like horrible anxiety feelings rushed in and it jolted me straight awake. Literally caused me to lose all me REM sleep for at least 5 days, very bad trip let me tell you...

I know the exact feeling and made a post about it here:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6451326/an/0/page/0
I got it whenever I was sort or zoning out and thinking about something... then when I would make a realization on what I was thinking about, I would be hit by that shock feeling.
Suimush's post seems to make sense for what I've experienced:
"I think its because since your still semi under the influence of the drug your brain is still in a semi alert state so a stimulus recieved by you produces a stroger reaction to it because of the fact that your in that dreamy quasi sleep state."
