Time Between Sterilization and Inoculation

I ordered a B+ spore syringe from spores101 and I was pretty sure that it would come today (Saturday) because it was shipped Wednesday, so I steam sterilized my rice cake jars on Friday so they would be ready for inoculation today. But the syringe didn't come today. So is it okay to inoculate the jars on Monday or later, or would that give contaminants enough time to start growing? Also, when I mixed the vermiculite, flour, and water for the cakes, I was surprised that the mixture was just moist. I was expecting it to be wet. Is it supposed to just be damp? I'm completely new to all this stuff.

Yea, it should be barely moist/damp, not wet. You should be ok waiting that long, but it's always best to inoculate as soon as a jar cools down. RR

Do you think it would be a bad idea to sterilize them again when I get the syringe (i.e. would that cause the cakes to do something like dry up)?

The same thing happened to me on my first grow. I kept my jars sealed in the pressure cooker for 3 or 4 days and then inoculated. Worked perfectly fine.

You'll be fine. I used an old syringe (3+ years old) and the spores never germinated after 2 weeks. I used a different syringe 2 weeks later in the same jars and they colonized fine.

Thanks - one more question. I have four really small holes poked in each lid which are big enough for the syringe to inoculate, but I'm worried that they won't allow enough gas exchange. Does the size of the holes really matter?

If the syringe can fit through the holes, you should be fine. Just cover them up with band-aids or something of the sort. If they seem to stall when they're growing, I usually just loosen the bands up too alow more gas exchange.
