Jury Duty

Has anyone ever been called to jury duty? Did you participate or blow it off? I just wondered what this experience was like for them, and how it affected or shaped future opinion/outlook (or not).

How it affected the view on what? Life in general? Justice? Breaking the law? Cn you be more specific?

I've been called. But a week later, before I responded, I moved. From what I hear they are still requesting me at my old address heheh. If you do go though I hear your supposed to get free food, and I would do it just for the experience - no matter how dull it may be. I'd take a flask.

Well even the free food thing could cause a problem if you don't want, or can't eat, what they give you. I don't imagine the attorney general has great menu picks, unless it is for Gonzales lunch.

Well, I really liked your idea about the flask. Problem is I can do longer partake of the alcohol persuasion. Seems I developed a reaction to consumption. Severe negative health effect.

I was called, and actually served.
It was a rather boring case (a simple car accident) but I actually found the process to be very interesting.
The dynamic of arguing/deliberating is what you would expect. Some people are much more persuasive than others. It was diverse group of old, young educated and non-educated people, thus opinions differed.
Most everyone took it seriously. unfortunately, we ended the case on a friday and there were some mutterings of: "Well I don't care how we vote, I want to go home". This dampened my view of the justice system, but in general I think it is fair and works. I also learned the value of a good lawyer.
Since it was a minor thing and only lasted two days, I found the experience interesting, and actually rewarding. It was a chance to see justice in action in a way you don't see on "Judge Judy".
-------------------- ...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge. It is an indellible experience; it is forever known. I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did. Smith, P. Bull. Menninger Clinic (1959) 23:20-27; p. 27. ...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely. Osmond, H. Annals, NY Acad Science (1957) 66:418-434; p.436

Most of the time when called to Jury Duty, they don't even use you. I've been called twice in the last 2 months and both times I called to see if I needed to serve and my name wasn't on the list. I'd go, though, for the reasons badchad listed. I think it would be interesting.

I got a summons and I blew it off. First of all I'm too opinionated and I knew they wouldn't pick me. But also I work freelance and I don't have a specific salary or hourly wage, so it was going to be a pain to get any kind of reimbursement for my time. It has the potential to be interesting, but it also has the potential to be a nightmare. What if you end up sequestered for two months on some lame corporate liability case?
Does that make me a bad person for not doing my civic duty? I guess maybe. If they had made it more convenient (eg not expecting me to be there at 7am) and paid me for my time (it should come out of the pocket of the losing party), I might have decided differently. I'm not exactly wracked with guilt though. I don't ever intend to end up in front of a jury, because I mind my own business and mostly obey the law. So it's not like I plan to impose on 12 other people to do what I didn't.
Useful tidbit: if you don't register to vote you don't get summoned (at least in CO).

Well personally, I don't view this as a duty. To impose that as a duty opens up just too much other shit that would also be "duty". Things like; you have a duty not to question "the authorities". (which is a view that I have experienced in both the state and the church) Where would that get us?

it is a good thing you blew it off ythan. I am surprised you did not know the dark secret of jury duty yet.
When you go into the back room your head gets chopped of and you are replaced with a damn clone, I was barely able to escape.

i was summoned to jury duty while i was vacationing in Europe for three months. When I got back I was sent a letter asking why i refused to show up. I called them and told them i was out of the country at that time, they rescheduled me 4 months later, i had school so i called again. 4 months later i was summoned again. I called the day i was supposed to go, and it was canceled so i never even had to go.

If I remember correctly you have to bring in a pay stub and they reimburse you something like $30/day plus meals. But if you're a student, unemployed, or you can't prove your employment you don't get paid.
