casing using PF tek
    #6783118 - 04/13/07 01:12 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

I took two PF cakes... I took a sterile fork and split them open into small nickel size pieces.... (All in sterile environment)

i took my tin container and put a 1/2 inch of vermiculite on the bottom and then put my shredded cakes on top of that...

Then I took my 50/50 mix with peatmoss, vermiculite, water, and crushed coral on top of that.... a good 1/2 inch to an inch or so...

Now the 50/50 mix was pressure cooked before I put it on there..

After I put this all together, I put a piece of plastic on the container and poked alot of holes in it...

I put it in the incubation chamber at 81 degrees... Its been a week and I dont see anything showing through yet...

Any suggestions?

Making sure humidity is high and increasing FAE ought to speed things along.

It's your choice, but most guides suggest a 1-2 inch casing layer on top.

EDIT: out of interest, how did you keep the casing layer clean as it cooled after you pressure cooked it?

Might as well just fruit it now. With a casing of peat and verm it's not going to colonize the top layer, which is good. A lot of people, like myself, 'case' with coco coir and the myeclium colonizes it because it has nutrients. A true casing layer has no nutes, and that's good because it just creates a good environment / protection for the myc. so you don't want it stickin out.

Give it plenty of fresh air and plenty of water and youll have some nice fruits in a week or two!

Also, pasteurize casing material instead of sterilize it. This means, keep it at 150-180F for about an hour. You want some beneficial bacteria left in the casing.

After I mixed everything together... I put it into quart jars... the same jars with air exchange I use for my grain...

I had 2 jars filled with vermiculite (Dry) and 5 filled with the mix... all were covered with aluminum... Pressure cooked it.. and let it sit in the cooker untill I was ready to make my casing...
