Guitar chords
    #6779704 - 04/12/07 05:17 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

Well I've finally got some new strings for my acoustic, and this time I'm approaching it seriously....

I know a few chords: E, D, A, C, G and Am ..

what other chords should I look into so I can improvise some tunage?

I really don't know where to start.. my uncle gave me these chords tabbed out for me.. so what else should I look into?

Looks like you need your B and F chords. From there learn Bar Chords, Diminished Chords, differences between Majors and Minors etc.

You can have a look at www.cyberfret.com I think they have chords there. If not, wal-mart has this poster with a lot of chords on it. I have the scales poster, and they make a few mistakes with it but it's a good resource and so I'm sure the Chords one is also a good beginning resource.

Look into learning barre chords. You don't wanna be stuck playing in first position all the time. An easy way to learn how the different chords fit together without actually learning the theory behind it is LEARNING SONGS! Learn some songs you like and remember the different chord progressions used.. Eventually you'll start to develop an ear for what chords sound good with what chords. Like they always say, practice makes perfect.

if you want to improvise and jam, theory is your best friend.

i like music theory and always learning it in small doses so I don't get burnt out.

technique will go a lot further than you think when it comes to long term. don't practice bad habits out of laziness.

So you already know some good open chord shapes.

Try moving those shapes up the neck. Like your open C chord for example, move that up two frets (just slide them fingers up buddy you don't need to bar it) and you've got a D chord.

Those other chords work the same way. It's nice to know multiple voicings for the same chord it makes you faster and sound better.

learn 'add-ons' you can do to those chords to embellish your songs.

and,
here's a nifty chord. i play several songs which use it, so it's not THAT obscure.

Learn all the E-form and A-form major, minor, dominant seventh, major seventh and minor seventh barre chords.

I know you don't know what those are, but there are a million guitar sites to look them up on.

If you know those, you can play 99% of songs.

It might be easier to just find some simple songs you like and learn the chords just for those songs, adding three or four chords to your repertoire at a time.

I could recommend some simple songs if you tell me what kind of music you like.

Get a good book and experiment. :yesnod: Try all the open chords(they're easy and they sound good)  And after you can play lots of chords in standard get a book like I have now and learn chords for different tunings.

Celtic chords and tunings happen to be my favorite right now. And they are more familiar then you may think. Lots of music uses drop D, or Double D tuning.

Expand on you E's D' and A's. Learn all sorts of them. Even those basics will have you plunking out something neat in no time.

Also learn some scales. And don't be discouraged if it seem hard. For me guitar playing didn't get really fun until about 2 years in.
I enjoyed it. But I was always struggling.

Now it's been almost 7 years. :snowman::bongload::jamming: It's really fucking fun now. But those simple chords still matter. I often come back to them again and again. Even if most or part of a song uses some weird or hard to play chords.

As I said learn a bunch of A's E's and D's. For now.

GOOD LUCK. Keep us abreast of your progress.

It's an oldie.

The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out
The ones that go in are lean and thin
The ones that crawl out are fat and stout
Your eyes fall in and your teeth fall out
Your brains come tumbling down your snout

I started a few months ago and have been trying to get down some strumming patterns (down, down, up, down, etc) and scales as well.

Box of Rain is an easy song to learn if you like The Dead. :gd_icon:
