myc disappears after shaking or breaking up substrate
    #6779946 - 04/12/07 06:35 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

why is it that whenever i shake a rye jar that is about 85% colonized, it looks like all the myc dissapears? its as if the myc shakes off of the outside of the berries and goes into the middle of the jar or something. also, when i crumbled up a brf jar to inocculate some wheat berries, the substrate didn't look very white at all after wards even though when I broke it into big pieces, it was white everywhere.

After shaking, the mycelium becomes very thin, making it hard to see. The jar will become white again after a few days. Shaking it too much will severely weaken, or even kill, the mycelium. Once at 25-35% colonization is enough. What you experienced with crumbling the PF cake is also normal, and occurs for the same reason.

What Quake3 said. It's perfectly normal, although it will not kill the myc it will retard and delay cropping times.

Time to shake

30 hours later

Shaking batters myc.
It takes time to heal back up.
I shake once around 20% colonization.
JUST THAT ONCE.

there is also a virus called the die back disease which makes the myc disapear but its very uncommon.
