...and a new kitten makes 8. Big picture warning!
    #6780531 - 04/12/07 10:28 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Tomorrow is my fiance's birthday, and for a surprise present I got him a kitten. I decided on a kitten instead of an adult cat because we have 2 dogs and 5 ferrets, and a kitten who grows up around all of these other animals is more likely to coexist peacefully with them, and maybe even be friends, than an adult cat who might already dislike dogs or other animals.  So with the addition of this kitten, who my fiance has decided to name Maximus, we now have 8 pets

I found a woman on craigslist who was adopting these kittens to good homes, and I went to her house armed with a new cat carrier, some toys, and all of the necessary cat stuff in my trunk where I had been hiding it from my fiance for the past day and 1/2. There were 3 kittens left, and all looked pretty similar in terms of appearance. I picked Maximus because he had the softest fur, and also liked being handled more than the other 2 kittens did. The other 2 seemed very aloof, and he enjoyed being held and receiving affection. He especially loves belly rubs - it's cute, he rolls over on his back and purrs like a motorboat when you rub his tummy!

Maximus was born on January 31st, so he is about 9-10 weeks old. His Mother is part bengal, so he has some pretty neat looking stripes - he kind of looks like a zebra, especially on his tummy. Initially when I brought the little guy home, he was pretty overwhelmed, I suppose I would be too! Both dogs wanted to sniff him over thoroughly, lick him, and play. He just wanted to sleep after his long car ride home! My fiance loves him, and says that he was 100% surprised by his gift - I don't know HOW he didn't know...when I was on my way home he called my cell phone and I answered, and the kitten meowed very very loudly from his cat carrier in the back seat. I guess he didn't hear it, lucky for me!

At first Maximus hid under the ferret crate, or under the couch, and just wanted to either be held securely or be somewhere out of sight. The dogs are a bit intimidating I'm sure! Now though, he's settled down a lot. He's playing with everything, eating a bit, and is very vocal, walking around the house meowing. He even cuddled with the dogs for a bit on their dog bed on the floor. I'm proud of them, they are being very gentle with him and giving him lots of love - they did eat his food when we weren't looking though, obviously!

Here are some pictures of our newest addition to the family

I know - me and my menagerie   I love it though, I've always wanted to have a ton of animals.  I hope someday that I can live in an environment where I can have horses, sheep, maybe even some chickens!

A few days ago the fence that we were having installed around our property was completed, so now we have a 6 foot cedar fence around the whole yard.  We have been saying for a while now that when we're settled in our new place and the yard is fenced off, we'd like to volunteer as a foster home for the rescue group that we got our dog Molly from.  So, now that we're settled and our fence is up, we're doing just that   Next weekend we get our first foster dog.  His name is Irish, he's a 1 yr old black lab mixed with something.  He looks like a purebred lab with white  toes and a splotch of white on his chest. Here is a picture of him

Once we get him here, we'll be in charge of writing up a biography on him -  what he's good at, what he still needs work on (and working with him in those areas), whether or not he's good with other dogs, cats, little kids, etc.  Basically everything a potential adopter would want to know about the dog.  Then we get to screen potential applicants and make the final decision on what home he goes to!  I'm very excited about this.  The average length of time in a foster home for a dog is about 2-3 weeks or so.  If it goes well, which I'm confident it will, then we can take another dog as a foster if we want to

Hey, yeah I defintiely don't do that, I learned pretty quickly with my lab puppy that I shouldn't let pets bite on your hands, ever.

Laska I'm glad you like the pictures, thanks!

Maybe I'll change my title to "Shroomery Zoo Keeper".

Woot - it's 12:30, officially my fiance's birthday!  That means that I get to shave his head now!   Every year on his birthday he buzzes his hair...it's his only hair cut of the year :tongue2:

Here are some more pictures...the dogs are both being very good to the new kitten.  All 3 took a nap together on the couch last night, it was adorable!

I'm also including some pictures of Molly, who is demonstrating how to properly eat a rawhide stick :lol

Cute kitty...though aren't you going a little overboard with all the animals? :smirk:

You'll never get another vacation again with all those pets in tow...

Great pictures. I don't think I've ever seen as many animals that get along so well together as your's do. I love that sixth one to the bottom where the kitten has his paw over the dogs nose, it's so cute.

Luckily, we're pretty well set in terms of pet sitting - a woman I'm friends with runs a ferret rescue group and watches the ferrets for us every time we go away, and suffer's sister watches the dogs.  She has a cat, too, so she'll probably be fine with watching him as well.  It would definitely be an issue is any of the animals were aggressive or not housebroken, or had any issues like that, but they're all pretty low maintenance.  But yes - we are going overboard with all the animals, there is no disputing that

Like another poster said though, they all get along really well, which makes taking care of them a breeze.  They're all really well trained and fun to be around.  We have a big fenced off yard so they're not constantly under foot

cutest one right there.  I'm jealous, i've been wanting another kitten for a long time now.  Unfortunately my current cat will eat the kitten, she's way too territorial still to be taking in new pets.  When my friend brought his german shepard over here my cat had no qualms about beating the shit out of her nose when the dog got too excited.  It's kind of funny watching a 10 lb cat make a 90 lb dog cry like a little bitch

Molly is too funny.  She's still teething, so it takes her a while to devour rawhide, and she works it around in her mouth to try to eat it and makes the funniest faces while she does it

Heh - sort of the same thing here, my ferrets regularly beat the crap out of both of my dogs, mostly Lucy.  She just lays there with a dopey grin on her face and plays with them while they jump at her face and nip at her ears.  She loves it though, so it's all good.  I'm betting that it will be the same thing with the kitten - when he gets a bit bigger and realized what a wuss Lucy is he'll bully her all day long.  Molly isn't AS much of a wuss - she dominates Lucy a lot of the time, especially when it comes to bones.  We'll give each of them a bone, and as soon as we're not looking, Molly drops her, goes over to Lucy and steals her bone, and then hoardes both of them while Lucy sits there confused.  What's weird though is that as soon as Molly approaches her, Lucy willingly DROPS her bone like "Here, take it."  Molly doesn't bark at her, or growl at her, or do anything - it's strange.  And then we usually  take the stolen bone back and give it back to Lucy, but it's like a battle to get her to TAKE the bone back.  It's like she doesn't want it anymore because she knows Molly wants it.  Very weird

sounds like lucy isn't comfortable being lead bitch is all. Although i think the term alpha usually refers to male dogs, molly could have definitely taken on the alpha role. If molly has any herding instincts that also may explain why as well.
