Casing Choice
    #6778704 - 04/12/07 11:51 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Ok so i just read a post by RR and he says Verm is one of the worst choices of casing!

Does anyone know why? RR?

I'm guessing that its possibly something to do with soaking up moisture away from the mushies?

Also having a pet scorpion i have bags of rainforest substrate. This contains:

Forest Bed
Calci-Sand
Verm
Coconut Bark

It's very good for with humidity and stays moist quite well.

Reckon this could be used as a casing layer?

Verm is not too good by itself, but it is good mixed. A good casing is 50/50 peat moss / vermiculite with some lime and gypsum mixed in.

Peat/verm at a fifty-fifty mix, buffered with lime and gypsum seems to produce the most prolific flushes.

Vermiculite on its own may not be the optimal choice, but it does work and it does have a few particular advantages: it can't contaminate at all, and it has very good capacity for holding water. I have gotten about 160% biological efficiency repeatedly from rye grain cased with vermiculite, in a dirty plastic bag in a dusty corner of my computer room. No high-tech fruiting chamber involved.

The main disadvantage with vermiculite casings from my point of view is that it's impossible to see when the verm is too dry. With ordinary soil you see the dry spots instantly.
