 end of the world legends

people say that the world will end in fire and brimstone, maybe a nuclear war or a heavenly body crashing into the earth... a chaotic, fiery death. well the norse say, that the world will end in cold, darkness, and silence. in the end days it will snow for days on end, until all the earth is covered completely in snow... then a wolf's head (forgot his name) will eat the earth.
so... what other cultural legends are out there?

cold -- the universe will expand forever, heat death, long cold, proton decay, ultimate darkness...
hot -- universal expansion will cease, all will gather together into "big crunch" (perhaps to begin again with a new
'big bang" ???)

as for me, i wasn't there to witness the beginning (that "i" can rememeber). and i won't be there to witness the end (as far as "i" can tell) --- but, then, i don't recall my own beginning, and may not be a credible witness to my own end... but here in the middle (of my life, of relative universal sizes, or durational experiences, of the life of the planet, the sun, or even the universe) may be as good a vantage point as any, yes?

the mayans developed/discovered a cosmic calendar that says the unvierse operates cyclically, rotating and moving through dimensions of awareness, and that in 2012 this current cycle ends and the whole things starts again, whatever the whole thing maybe I am not sure, i think it refers to the structure of reality as we know it.

Did you or anyone else decipher Mayan text which states this?
How come the calendar hanging on my wall which has an ending date of Dec 31, 2002 does not have the same significance?

I don't know if the Gregoran calender has any relation to the Mayan calender. I do know that the Gregoran calender is about 9 years behind the Mayan, so the Mayan's 2012 would be our 2003. The Mayan calender is based on the cycles of the moon, whereby the Gregoran calender is based on God knows what.

Isnt the Gregoran calender based on the earths orbit of the sun? Earth takes 365 and a quarter days to go round the sun and thats why we have leap years every 4 years to catch up on those quarters.

it's my understanding that the Gregorian calendar is 3188 years behind the Mayan.
on 7.26.1992 Earth entered the last 20-year segment of the 26,000 year grand cycle, and the 4th Sun (5,200 year great cycle) of the Mayan calendar. This last time-space frame of the calendar is governed by its two highest signs: the 13th Ray and the Solar Mind. on july 26th 2002 it will be Mayan "year" 5192.*
The Thirteenth Ray is the highest vibration in the Mayan calenar; it is the ray of transformation. The 20th sign, Solar Mind or "Ahau" reveals the mystery of light, both physical and spiritual. The auspicious combination of these signs indicates that our planet is entering into the time of initiation into the greater Body.
As a harmonic number in the Mayan system, 5200 is seen as the product of 260 X 20. 5200 is a harmonic fifth of the 26,000 year galactic cycle, and is an overtone of 52, which is an important number that appears within the 260-unit sacred calendar as 13 groups of Four signs whose numerical values add up to 28 (lunar cycle.)
The Gregorian system is based on the moment in time, each year, when the star Sirius and the Sun are in opposition to one another, with Sirius @ the zenith of the night sky while the Sun is directly on the opposite side of the earth at midnight on December 31 - in all local time zones. In the Mayan and Egyptian systems, it is opposite, on July 26 when the Sun is between Sirius and the Earth.
