lid question

I have a question about lids. I did a search to answer my question but found conflicting answers. On my last grow here’s what I did. Im using qt jars with metal lids. I drilled a 1/4 inch hole on the center on the lid. I took tyvek and covered the mouth of the jar, placed the ring and lid top of the jar. I put ployfill in the 1/4 hole. I noticed that it took 3-4 weeks for my wbs jars to finish and a few contaminated. I was wondering if the polyfill was limiting gas exchange and thus taking the jars longer to colonize? Should I just use the tyvek without the polyfill on the next try?

One or the other, but not both. You should either be using poly-fill or Tyvek. Each material on their own will provide enough gas exchange. Having the two together would severely limit the amount of CO2 expulsion.

Wronguy- Thank you for the reply. I guess thats why it took so long to colonize, cus the tit temp was right on at 80.
Should I worry about contams getting through the small hole from the injection site? Do I need to cover this tiny hole?

The needle size doesn't need to be any larger than 18 gauge for spore inoculation and the hole left will be minimal. I have never experienced contaminates through the pierced hole when using Tyvek. If you want to be safe, you can do one of two things:
1. If using Tyvek, leave the lid a quarter turn loose prior to inoculating and turn the lid tight when you finish (this only applies if your hole is offset, not in the middle). This will leave the hole under the lid instead of in-line with the metal lid hole.
2. Inoculate through the hole without using Tyvek and immediately stuff the hole with poly-fill.
Again, speaking from personal experience, I have never experienced a contaminate using Tyvek, as the whole was extremely small and almost seem to self repair after the needle was removed.

Here is the way I used to do it.
You can go with a 2 hole lid.
Innoc through 1 hole & tape it over. You can tape it over with clear packing tape. If you don't have micropore tape. The other hole allows for enough gas exchange.
