Cracked jars in pc

i cooked up my second batch of cakes to use up the rest of my brf in a pc (1st batch was jus boiled in pots)
-pc'd for 45 mns at 15 psi, the jars were at least 3-4 inches off the bottom of the pc with tin foil on tops...
-3 of the jars cracked and all of them look a little more moist than when i put them in there.
- it also seems they shrank a little
- i nkow the cracking of jars isnt normal but is everything else when you pc normal?
I innoced anyways after they cooled for a day or so.. did i just waste a syringe?

It sounds like you must have lifted the weight off at the end of the cycle. That, or having the jars on the bottom of the pc will cause them to crack. The other thing that causes it is not using autoclavable jars, such as mason jars.
Yes, if you inoculated cracked jars, you wasted a syringe. Contaminants will get in through the crack. RR

RR - Is lifting the weight a risk for cracking? I was thinking it would be a good way to release pressure quickly because I want to shake up jars while they're still hot.

Never lift the weight, and properly prepared jars do not need to be shaken hot. I can let my PC cool for two days and when I remove the jars and turn them upside down, every single kernel separates from every other kernel, like sand in an hourglass. The key is proper preparation, not shaking hot. Yes, lifting the weight not only dries out jars and blows out filters, it cracks jars as well due to pressure buildup and rapid cooling. RR

-what do u think about the ones that shrank a little and look a little more moist than when i put them in there? should i wait them out and see if they go anywhere?
thanks for your help RR.

Wow, thanks ALOT. I've done my share of homework and this is important info I hadn't seen before. And just in time, i'm running my first batch of grain in a new pc in the morning. I lifted the weight last night after a test run w/o jars - won't do it again.

Lift off the weight, when PC is under pressure. Will cause water inside it to boil. That & NO TRIVET is the major cause of cracked jars.

the trivet is a spacer that keeps jars off the bottom of the PC - and away from intense heat. If you don't have one, a 100% cotton towel will work on the bottom of PC instead.

yea i had those and they were even propped up 3 inches off the bottom. more than likely its cuz i took that weight off and then opened the lid right away.... or maybe the temp was to high RR said bring it to the point where the rattle isnt rattleing..
Would taking the weight off and opening it cause the excess moisture and the shrinkage also?
are the 9 that didnt crack stilll worth waiting out to see if mycelium grows?
thanks for your help..

Removing the weight to get rid of pressure causes moisture loss, shrinking of the substrate/grains, cracked jars, ruined filters and probably some others I didn't mention. NEVER do it. When the time expires, shut off the stove and go to bed. The next morning when the PC is cool, go to the next step. Don't use those. Consider it a learning experience and do it right next time. RR

also, check and see if you had enough water in the pc, perhaps you had your stove on too hot and evaporated all the water. this has happened to me in the beginning, so its something to consider. it sucks losing jars because they cracked. well, it sucks losing them period...
