Which kind of substrate is best to use? Rye and make little trays? Or vermiculite and brown rice flour to make those solid cubes?

I personally think Rye is easier than BRF cakes.

You don't use grains in your substrate. You colonize grains in the jar, then spawn to a medium ie. Poo, staw, coir, verm.
What is best with anything in mycology is what works best for your setup. HPoo is good stuff but a first timer it wouldn't be best (well in most cases)
I see this is your first post- to give you a "heads up", you can find 99% of the answers to your mycology questions by just useing the search funtion. It will search every post thats been on the board since it started (well close too) I enjoy the search and use it everyday because you can see the conversations that went on and what was discussed.
When people see you not search and ask a question thats answered already, its hard to get responses to your future posts. And go through the Shroomery FAQ.
Then when you are having problems finding your answers is when you should start a new thread.

Pf tek is the easiest to start with then graduate to grains. BRF is alot more forgiving for newbies..Read... Read... Read...thats how everyone has learned...seems frustrating at times but you'll get it eventually...it took me a year of trial and error to get a great harvest...good luck

Brf is the way to go if you do not have a pressure cooker, otherwise you may be happier with grains(I was)Read my Sig,try something,if you don't like it try something else, there are enough different styles of growing that it may take some experimenting to find what you like best and what works for you but keep trying and you will find it,good luck

Yea WAAAAY easier, but I cant get back into the habit of "Cake bashing" so I just try and tell people not to let anyone tell them what they "should" do 1st,if you think you want to skip right to grain do it,I personally think this is the only way to go but some people are just gonna do cakes cause thats what everyone tells them they should do 1st

I like both, and find that they both have their place in this hobby.

I prefer grains, feel free to look at my pictures,I say this not to be an asshole even though it seems that way,I say it only because it may help someone make up their mind what method they would like to try, seriously,if you have a PC learn to get good at grains, you will be glad you did

I think Im going to give rye a go only because Im having a time trying to find vermiculite at the store. But everything else is ok. If I do it watch for a log sometime in the future.

If I use a lobster steamer for the jars instead of a pressure cooker would that work? If you think it wont I found a cooker for $40 that is 8 quarts. I dont know why the steamer wouldnt work because If I open that while its going I better move my arm away before the steam floats up or I wont have any skin on my arm. But you never know.
EDIT: Oh and I realize this has been asked several times before but I did a search and the full answer to my question wasnt really asked.
