Added Sterilization of PF substrate

Hello again to all, A few years ago I know a fellow who used the pf tek and inoculated 18 1/2 pint jars and lost 4 to contams, mostly being molds and such. However one actually had several maggots in the bottom of the jar , the tek was followed and steam sterilization with a large pot used, the remainder of jars fruited well, I was wondering if anyone else had ever encountered this and perhaps was hoping to receive some feedback and opinions as to why this was only limited to one jar as opposed to many. Also I have read at various places suggestions to leave the sterilized substrate covered in the jar for several days after sterilization to see if any contams grow before moving on to inoculation, I can see the benefits of this but what would be the draw backs, would it diminish the substrate in anyway or have an impact on the crop, also I've seen suggestions of placing the brf and vermiculite in an oven at 300 f for 20 mins and boiling the water before preparing the substrate and placing it in the culture jars, what would be the pros and cons to this? I have seen some people saying it could hurt the flour and was unnecessary, I'm just hoping to get some feedback on these questions thanks again.

sir your problem with the maggots was probably due to a close range of one 'roberts family'. with piles of garbage like that, its very possible the larve simply materialized in the jars, from sheer filth ESP.

Ah i would say that is a brilliant observation, i wonder if you could isolate said "filth" and utilize it to build a immune system within the mycelia definatly if it could become immune to "robertsitus" it could withstand even nuclear blasts.

i couldnt expect you to understand the replies without having been there definatly it was an inside answer and the contam was proablly due to this previous reply and a pc doesnt answer how only one jar contained the contams.

thats jus that way the ball bounces. sometimes you just loose a couple to contams, sometimes you loose none sometimes you loose them all! the baking of the substrate material and boiling of the water is just added pre-sterelization precautions. u can do it if you want im not sure if it helps. all this is unessasary though if you had a pressure cooker.

You can't sterilize pf jars in the oven. Period. A physical law of science is that water turns to a vapor at 100C/212F. Therefore, if you heat the interior of the jar to that temperature, it will be as dry as the sand in the sahara desert in the summertime.
If a fly deposits its eggs into an open inoculation hole, the eggs will hatch and the maggots will crawl down into the substrate to feed. Use micropore tape over the inoculation holes if flys are a problem in your area.
NEVER allow jars to sit for several days to 'see if contams grow'. If they were properly sterilized, contamination will have been killed. Inoculate when the jars have cooled to room temperature.
Follow the tek and either steam sterilize for 60 to 90 minutes, or pressure sterilze at 15 psi for 45 to 60 minutes. RR

thanks man , i thought it would dry out the substrate but perhaps i wasnt clear what i had read said "baking" the verm, brf before mixing but i still figured with a pc it would be unessaceary, and yes flies where present so it makes sense i didnt realize the maggots would crawl down into the substrate seems like common sense though and thanks for the advice on not letting the jars sit too cool man
