My awesome cakes are doing better than my casings?
    #6769595 - 04/10/07 10:56 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Okay. So I have gone through 2 flushes off 4 BRF cakes that were dunked and rolled. I had about a 40 dry gram yield. My 2 MGMC casings are looking like they are not going to do as well as my cakes. I know my cakes did great, but what could be going on with my casings? The fruit is larger on the average with the casings, but there is not as much fruit. I used 95% humidity with misting during pinning, and I reduced it to 90% RH during fruiting. Am I doing something wrong, or should I just accept that I was fortunate with my cakes? Is the 2nd flush usually better?

MM

Sounds like you are getting a poor pinset on your casings. Usually casings give more fruits because of their larger surface area than cakes. If you have uneven casing colonization, then you will most likely have an uneven pinset, resulting in a small number of fruits, but most likely larger individual fruits (as you were saying). This is because the more fruits you have in one flush stretch the nutrients/energy of your substrate to many fruits as opposed to only a few fruits. However, the more fruits you have, the more potential you have for a larger yield.

Check out Hyphae's "A pinning strategy" in the search engine, or find it within the link in my sig.

Actually, casings don't do squat. They only provide moisture to the substrate below, and help to provide a microclimate suitable for pinning. That's what supports the flush. MGMC won't do much by itself. A casing should be applied over a bulk substrate, which you didn't mention doing.

No, I didn't use a bulk substrate. I just used some crumbled cakes (2 per casing). I will go with bulk on these Costa Ricans that should be ready in about 10 days.

Thank RR

I did that once but used pure verm for the casing.
my first flush had a great pinset but small fruit.
i kept the temps and humidty where they were supposed to be.
after the flush I dunked the casing and continued.
THE 2ND FLUSH WAS AWESOME!
nice pinset and medium to large fruit all around.
