I really think you can get as much if not more information online than in books.. and anyway think of the cost!!!
But hey your money.. the Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World: An Identification Guide is a very good one. Have a look on google books (click "more" on the google homepage) they give you quite a bit of info about the books and have quite a few listed.
But as i said, there are plenty of good resources on the internet(erowid helped me alot), as for specific to melbourne, i couldnt say ive come across any books specific to melbourne.. but im a melbourne hunter too and i find it fairly easy to indentify the mushrooms i pick from the internet alone, and remember people on this forum are more than happy to help with identification if you post some good pics.
Happy Hunting

I may be wrong, but i think there is only really one type of mushroom that you would worth be looking for in melbourne, and that would be Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Do some research on them.

Since the initial publication of the charged electromagnetic spectrum, humans learned that what they can touch, smell, see, and hear... is less than one millionth of reality. --------------------------------

Also i suggest reading these boards and taking detailed notes when something pops up...I have been here for only a week and have 6 full pages of notes that i can study later when I am not on the internet.
Just like anything else growing weed, hunting for non-active edibles, its all about studying, studying, studying.....enless you have an experienced hunter to train from i woudl suggest this way. Also i would invest in a great digital camera so incase you have questions and what-not you can ask the guys here at the shroomery before you eat that shroom yoru not to sure about.

Also before you go out I woudl study this thread on how to request an ID request, that way before you pick the shroom to bring for ID you can make sure you get all the information from it and around it.
The ID Form is here with 3 examples: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5731447/an/0/page/0
