"dunking" in jars...
    #6768283 - 04/10/07 12:20 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Anyone had any experience in rehydrating/dunking in the cake jars? I am concerned that if I dunk several cakes together and one is contamed it will contam the rest. Why not just pour some water into each individual jar, and birth them after they get a drink? Will they expand to much to get out of the jar?

Your concern is valid. And yes you can just pour the water into the jars they're currently in and then birth them a day later. Mycelium is pretty resistant to contams once it fully colonizes the substrate, so it's not really that big of a deal.

It's not a good idea at all. One, it takes water pressure to force the water into the cakes, which the very small amount of water that fits in the jars doesn't provide. Two, as the cakes draw in water they swell up. When the cake hits the edge of the glass, it stops swelling, thus stops intaking water. Three, the swelled up cakes are tighter against the glass, thus harder to birth and can easily get damaged in the process.

You should birth each cake one week after full colonization, then smell to determine if it's good or not, then wash under the faucet with running water, and then soak for 24 hours at the bottom of a large pot. This will force more water into them.

so its not a major concern of contam spreading if you dunk several in a large pot of water?

As long as you inspect / smell all of them then no.

Anything that smells bad, or cringes your nose a bit is no good.

It should only smell of warm, mushrooms.

I have often soaked/dunked in the jars and the myc sucks up the water like a sponge. I always birth first clean them up under running tap water removing the verm layer first of course. I have never had a problem BTW and the jars are already pretty damn clean inside just a quick rinse is all. It certainly can be done safely and effectively if you want.
