The time approaches.
    #6766575 - 04/09/07 05:10 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Well, it was a long wait for my jars to completely colonize, but they're finally there. I've got 3 quarts of Mazapatec that are 99% colonized and 4 quarts of Costa Rican that are 85% colonized. Substrate is rye grain with a pinch of gypsum. *On a side note here, the gypsum eliminated all problems I had with moisture and overall stickiness of the kernels, which last time led to lipstick death. Thanks again for that tip RR.

I've made it this far and I feel that I am comfortable with the sterilization and preparation process for the jars. Contams seem to be 100% suppressed this time around. Now, I just have to worry about spawning and casing.

So, to lay out the big picture here in hopes I can get some good opinions, this is what I've got:

-7 Quart Jars of colonized subtrate. 3 Mazapatec / 4 Costa Rican.
-3 Tier Miniature Greenhouse, around 65% of the size of the 'common' 4 tier greenhouse.
-Ridiculous amount of old impeller type cool mist humidifers.
-Spare time.

Now, I've searched the boards and I've searched the boards... It's amazing how much info is out there. Digging through these forums is how I got this far to begin with. I'm posting this because I would like some wise eyes to look at my specific situation and offer any suggestions they may have. I'm as well-versed in the method I'm going to be attempting as I can be without doing it, so I've done my homework. One more thing also; I'll be posting pics of my setup and fully colonized jars to this thread soon so that hopefully any blatant mistakes can be picked off. Anyways, there's my disclaimer... and here are my questions/thoughts.

I.
I plan on spawning the colonized rye to a coir/coffee mix. How much rye should be spawned to how much C/C? What size/orientation do you recommend for my casing containers within the 3-tier house? Is coir/coffee even a good idea for me? Is cold shocking done after the rye has been spawned and mixed in the casing container?

II.
Is there any way for me to test if I'm going to need an Ultrasonic or not? I've read a lot of conflicting posts about this, and haven't really found a clear answer. The green house in question is substantially smaller than a martha or a 4-tier mini greenhouse. My current plan is to simply use a cool mist.

III.
After spawning to coco, should I then also case with coco also? I have read a lot about miracle grow, etc. I can't say that I understand the difference but I would like to. Also, what is a good indicator as to when to actually case?

Thanks in advance for any help, I'm well on my way but I just need a little extra push. I owe my friends a night of psychedelic confusion to put up with all of my cubensis fascination gibber-jabber, so the sooner these guys are springing up the better! =P

Generally, the spawn rate is 1:5.

If your cool mist is going inside the greenhouse, that should be all you need.

Problem with coco as a casing layer is that it has nutrients and can cause overlay. I've heard good things about the miracle grow stuff too, but I make my own casing using 5 parts reed sedge peat (peat) 5 parts vermiculite, and 1 part high calcium limestone (calcium carbonate). I'm pretty sure it's cheaper, around 25-30 cents per gallon.

With the cool mist inside the greenhouse you will be fine without an ultrasonic,I use 2-3 qts or colonized rye for each half brick of coir, this will give you a 3-4 inch depth in a 16 qt sweater box and is exactly what you want.Cover it in foil with holes poked in it until it turns fully white.Do not case with more coir, get the moisture control miracle grow and after your substrate turns white apply a thin(1/4-1/2 inch) layer of it,wait it out a bit longer and expose to fruiting conditions

Good luck:thumbup:

Thanks for your responses, a few more things have arisen as I home in on my target method.

For now I'm going to plan to put one cool mist inside of the greenhouse. Are there any sterility precautions that come with putting the humidifier inside rather than outside? For example, moisture buildup within the humidifier itself, or the fact that I'll have to disturb the greenhouse to refill?

Also, since I only have 7 quarts to colonized rye I guess I'll only be able to make 3 cases. Well, kinda, I guess I have two options: Two cases with 2 quarts each and one case with 3 quarts, or 3 cases with two quarts each and one case with 1 quart. Which would be better? Or maybe I should just do 2/2/2 and do a g2g with the other for my future children?

Lastly, two questions in regards to pasteurization.

For coir: Looks like i'm going to need about 2 bricks of coir. What's the best way to pasteurize this in a sweater box? I've heard pouring water in buckets, pillow cases, microwaving, etc. I don't mind spending the extra time/effort to do it right the first time, so any suggestions on which method I should use?

For the MGMC: I'm going to use this as my casing layer. Is the pasteurization process any different than for the coir, or should I just use the same method as I have asked to be prescribed above?

Thanks again for your help, especially you Blutjager... you have a knack for popping in at the right moment and telling me exactly what I need to know.

I would go 2 trays with 2 qts each and 1 with three:hehehe:

As far as preparing coir goes all I have ever done to it is but it in a 5 gallon paint bucket and dump a gallon of hot water on it,I suppose since the water is hot it could sort of be construed as pasteurized but somehow I don't think so

The Miracle Grow I do pasteurize before applying as a casing layer,a good way to pasteurize casing in jars is spelled out by the very knowledgeable Monster Mitch in this >> http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5669077/an/0/page/0 thread. Scroll down its like halfway through the page, and you may find it a bit easier to apply if its slightly on the dry side rather than 2 wet,if its dry you can always fix this at casing time when you mist to "Glistening" a la Hyphae's pinning strategy:rockon:
