My first PF Cake (long)
    #6766195 - 04/09/07 03:45 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster! I've been nursing this PF cake for the better part of a month. I inoculated it around the 10th of March and here's what it looks like now.

The Story:
It's the basic PF tek using Amazons spores I got from Ralph's. The verm I used is a bit too fine (about the consistancy of sand) as the package didn't state how coarse it was so I had to open it to find out. I decided to just go ahead and use it anyway since I had to drive 1/2 hour to get it.

I used the old-fashioned steam sterilization to keep it contam free. I let the jar sit for almost a week before innoculating. I wasn't sure I wanted to go ahead with using such a fine vermiculite. Also the house temps usually range from 63-67F during winter (yes, it's still basically winter here :/ ). Since it was contam free after the 5 days I decided 'what the hell?' and inoculated it. I figure if anything I'd be able to make sure the spore syringe is viable.

I know once you inoculate it you're supposed to set it and forget it and keep it in a dark place for a few weeks but I couldn't resist peeking at it every now and then. Colonization took rather long, 3-4 weeks, probably due to the vermiculite. The slightly lower temperatures may have also contributed to the length.

After the cake was fully colonized I dunked it, but only for 8 hours. I'm not the only one who uses the fridge and I was a bit paranoid about having it in there.

Question: in the PF Tek guide on this site it says you should wait until premordia show up to birth, does that go for those who dunk before first flush?

After dunking I popped it in my little fruiting chamber. It's a container that a rotisserie chicken from a grocery store came in. I punch a few extra holes up top for air and below for excess water drainage. There's probably about 2" of perlite for humidity.

The first pin showed up about 4-5 days after birthing. A few days later a few more pins showed up. If I dunked it for at least 12 hours I probably would have gotten a better pinning but the fact it actually pinned and they seem to be growing well is enough for me at this point.

After the first flush I'll dunk and roll. I plan on drying the shrooms out with a desiccant. After this I'm going to make a few more cakes and do the crumble/case tek and see what happens with that.

It isn't really necessary to wait for primordia to birth, but the idea is to give about a week after full colonization for the mycelium to digest some of the food it has just colonized. We call this process 'consolidation' and it makes for a much better pinset. Consolidation allows the mycelium to perform this process while still in the jars so they don't dry out before the flush. Those who birth right at full colonization often end up with dry cakes by the time they flush, which reduces yields.

I also use fine verm, and it works fine. In fact, it holds a bit more water than course verm, and the mycelium seems to colonize it just fine. It's also better for use as the contaminant barrier on top.

Your cake is bluing a bit so it's too dry. You can pour some water directly onto the bowl shaped divot in the top of the cake that was formed by the shape of the jar. It will take a few hours to soak in, then you can repeat the process, and this should help to hydrate your cake to get it through this flush. Good luck.

The blueing was when I picked it up, you can even see my finger prints in that. I take it it should have returned to white with proper water, then?

once it's bruised it's bruised.  The discoloration won't go away.  A little bruising won't hurt anything, just don't kick your cakes around like footballs and try to be gentle when handling and moving them.

Ok! I usually am super gentle with my cake but I took the lid ring off and had to grab it. I also got curious and poked some of the fluffy micellium up top which caused that bruising.

That's good news on the fine vermiculite as well. I guess I won't have to go on an excursion to find some of the coarse stuff.

Many thanks for the informative posts
