end of the world legends
    #676595 - 06/13/02 01:47 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

people say that the world will end in fire and brimstone, maybe a nuclear war or a heavenly body crashing into the earth... a chaotic, fiery death. well the norse say, that the world will end in cold, darkness, and silence. in the end days it will snow for days on end, until all the earth is covered completely in snow... then a wolf's head (forgot his name) will eat the earth.

so... what other cultural legends are out there?

The world will end when someone in the lab trips and pulls the plug.

the wolf is fenris...
physicists' mythos :
cold -- the universe will expand forever, heat death, long cold, proton decay, ultimate darkness...
hot -- universal expansion will cease, all will gather together into "big crunch" (perhaps to begin again with a new
'big bang" ???)
~
for a cosmic egg continuously cycling universe model, see itzak bentov's wonderful little book _stalking the wild pendulum_ ...this book is well worth the search --- ask you library to obtain a copy for you, or your bookseller (i think it was published by bantam books)
~
the christian armegeddon and the norse ragnarok or only two tales of the ending of things from our human stories/myths... there are many more... our explanations of beginnings and of endings are endlessly fascinating... of course, we also have our maintaining models for existing in the eternal now...
~
what will happen to "the world as we know it" when all the bodhisattvas accomplish their goal of liberating all sentient beings?
~
has anybody read arthur c clarke's short story "the nine billion names of god" ? it still gives me chills, hehheh...
~
"but in the bitter end
this wildness brings me rest
i sleep in the eye of the storm
and in the startling end
bluewhiteness makes me calm
i dream in the eye of the wind"
(from: "when the mode of the music changes/by tuli kupferberg/on the fugs album "it crawled into my hand, honest")
~
"how is being born once any more astonishing than being born many times?" (attributed to alan watts)
~
dr shulgin doesn't buy into the red-shift story of the physicists big-bang scenario (in an essay in TIHKAL, i think...)
~
then there is fred hoyle's "steady state" theory, with the universe expanding just enough to make room for fresh hydrogen molecules created de novo (perhaps from the underlying quantum soup, or virtual pair particle flux, or something, i dunno...)
~
as for me, i wasn't there to witness the beginning (that "i" can rememeber). and i won't be there to witness the end (as far as "i" can tell) --- but, then, i don't recall my own beginning, and may not be a credible witness to my own end... but here in the middle (of my life, of relative universal sizes, or durational experiences, of the life of the planet, the sun, or even the universe) may be as good a vantage point as any, yes?
and like dr luther said at his trial by churchly authorities back in the 1500s, "here i stand. i can do no other. god help me."

They could have stopped at 8,999,999,999, but nooOOOOooOOoOOOOoo! They had to push it!

Yeah, AC is a brilliant guy; a major contributor to technology (geo-stationary satellite) and fiction as well as an aware (of the planet) human being.

the mayans developed/discovered a cosmic calendar that says the unvierse operates cyclically, rotating and moving through dimensions of awareness, and that in 2012 this current cycle ends and the whole things starts again, whatever the whole thing maybe I am not sure, i think it refers to the structure of reality as we know it.

How do you know this?

Did you or anyone else decipher Mayan text which states this?

How come the calendar hanging on my wall which has an ending date of Dec 31, 2002 does not have the same significance?

Most likely because you are using the Gregoran calender.

That doesn't answer the question in relation to the Mayan calendar.

I don't know if the Gregoran calender has any relation to the Mayan calender. I do know that the Gregoran calender is about 9 years behind the Mayan, so the Mayan's 2012 would be our 2003. The Mayan calender is based on the cycles of the moon, whereby the Gregoran calender is based on God knows what.

Isnt the Gregoran calender based on the earths orbit of the sun? Earth takes 365 and a quarter days to go round the sun and thats why we have leap years every 4 years to catch up on those quarters.

"i do know that the Gregoran calender is about 9 years behind the Mayan, so the Mayan's 2012 would be our 2003. The Mayan calender is based on the cycles of the moon, whereby the Gregoran calender is based on God knows what."

What is your Source?

it's my understanding that the Gregorian calendar is 3188 years behind the Mayan.
on 7.26.1992 Earth entered the last 20-year segment of the 26,000 year grand cycle, and the 4th Sun (5,200 year great cycle) of the Mayan calendar. This last time-space frame of the calendar is governed by its two highest signs: the 13th Ray and the Solar Mind. on july 26th 2002 it will be Mayan "year" 5192.*

The Thirteenth Ray is the highest vibration in the Mayan calenar; it is the ray of transformation. The 20th sign, Solar Mind or "Ahau" reveals the mystery of light, both physical and spiritual. The auspicious combination of these signs indicates that our planet is entering into the time of initiation into the greater Body.

As a harmonic number in the Mayan system, 5200 is seen as the product of 260 X 20. 5200 is a harmonic fifth of the 26,000 year galactic cycle, and is an overtone of 52, which is an important number that appears within the 260-unit sacred calendar as 13 groups of Four signs whose numerical values add up to 28 (lunar cycle.)

The Gregorian system is based on the moment in time, each year, when the star Sirius and the Sun are in opposition to one another, with Sirius @ the zenith of the night sky while the Sun is directly on the opposite side of the earth at midnight on December 31 - in all local time zones. In the Mayan and Egyptian systems, it is opposite, on July 26 when the Sun is between Sirius and the Earth.
