Im looking at magash's rye tek, seems to be for a beginner, but its unclear as fuck. Anybody care to clarify these things for me?
1.-" I pour out the water and fill and shake and pour that out. Put in a pot and the water is ready to simmer for 45 min. During the simmer is when the water is added to the grain" After you pour the water out the jar the final time, and put the grain in the pot to simmer, simmer with NO water? Im assuming he means add water to the pot/wet grain then simmer, unclear!! How much water do i add?
2.-"Simmer the grain and then rinse with water. " Simmer for how long? How should the grain look after simmering?(split in the grain, no split what?)
Thanks, and magash, care to clear up the steps ive pointed out, mabey a little more beginner freindly;) Aslo where do you buy your rye?

I haven't tried rye, but with bird seed the object during simmering is to saturate your grains. I let them sit in a pot for 24hrs @ room temp before simmering. With the WBS I just simmered for about an hour. Make sure NOT to BOIL!! Then drain and RINSE, for a while!! Let them drain again for 45 min. Then load jars and PC at 15 for 1.5hr. They should be pretty much ready to go.

Shakeing the grains in the jars with water is just a clever way of washing/rinsing the grains of excess junk.
With no water that wouldn't be simmering, that would be roasting. Put more water than grains... pretty simple. Keep about .5 - 1.5 inches of h2o above what your simmering.

Once your simmer starts- its best to turn off the heat or set it on the lowest setting and let them steep. Simmering is a bad term, steeping is what your going for. Keep stiring, bringing the bottom warmer grains to the top constantly. You don't want them bursting, but you want them close. Check the "shell" of the grain, it should JUST start to become translucent (look at them every 5min or so during steeping to make sure you catch your grains at the right time.

Get rye at the feedstore.
There is no exact answer for how much water to use or how long to steep/simmer your grains. Grains, kitchen equip, water, geographic location, plays a part on "how much and how long" questions.
Also, these questions are answered 1000 times over here on the shroomery. So... make sure you abuse the search funtion No need to ask questions that the answers are two clicks away from finding. The plus wit the search funtion is you get to see the discussions that went along with teh posts you find. Goodluck.

u can also find rye at organic food stores. they r called "rye berries" and ususally ~69-89 cents per lb. i would recomend this if ur not gonna be using a lot of it, but if u r u should definately go to a feed store where u can get 25lb bags for about $10.
and use the search posts function. ive asked almost the exact same questions when i first started.

Thanks for clearing that up. Im not first starting, but I did forget how to do rye, i only worked with it once or twice and ordered the rye fro mycosupply, 3 or 4 years ago. Ive always used popcorn, but seeing how shitty everybody says it is, im switching to rye.
