More Rye Questions

Would it be a good idea to take one of my jars that hasn't shown signs of mycellium on the bottom of my terrarium then put the on that is growing in the middle with another jar of rye on top? Cause i was thinking of doing that. Also what would be the chance of contamination if i cased it?

You can switch up your jars if you want, just don't open em up!!
You're going to need to spawn / case rye, or it won't benefit you very much.

I was just saying that two out of three jars dont have any growth. I was thinking of incubating them in the terrarium so that all the rye doesn't get wasted and to improve the mushroom growth... i think, lol. Anyways... that what i was thinking. I'm just worried about possible contamination in the terrarium. What would the time to incubate in the terrarium and the chance of contamination?

Don't heat ur incubation chamber higher than 80F and you will stave off contams better.

You don't put anything that's not fully colonized into a terrarium. RR

well.... the thing is if the one jar fully colonizes then i prolly wont have enough rye for my terrarium... would there be another way to make it so that the other two rye jars colonize... like the method where u just pour some of the mycellium into the other jars. I know i'm running the risk of contamination but i kinda need the other jars to colonize before i can grow. Just so that i have enough rye for the terrarium size. Thanks to all that have replied.

When a jar doesn't colonize, there's always a reason. Don't spread that reason into more jars. Fruit what you have and toss the rest. Make up new jars and start over. RR

What you are referring to is a grain to grain transfer, this would be good from a healthy jar into a new (Also clean and uncontaminated jar)Unfortunately dumpling healthy spawn from your good jar is not going to heal the spawn in the crappy jars,it works the other way around, you will only serve to ruin the rye you dump into the other jars, dump them start fresh and save yourself the headache, get yourself in the mindset that you will be going through spawn like crazy because you will be once you start doing good and even when your not doing good yet you will be using quite a bit to practice getting it right,no reason to try and salvage a jar of spawn,if its crap toss it and save yourself the hassle, chock it up to a learning experience and start again.Best of luck to you

hmm.... thanks guys.. it just seems to me that the other two jars that haven't done anything might be too dry... the one jar that did doesn't look dry like the others. The rye in the other jars is just fine. I just think they are too dry to show any growth. If thats the case i was hoping to salvage them just by incubating them in the terrarium or by the grain to grain method. I know its a stretch and i risk contamination but the rye looks just fine, just isn't growing anything. Incubation time is up to around a month right now too. For some reason they took a long time to show signs of growth. But.. idk... I still need to wait some more so i can get the one jar that is growing to 100%. Anyways... if anyone has tried to incubate in the terrarium because of similar situations, feedback is much appreciated. I'm wondering if it'll work and what the risks are.

Toss them out and start over. Rye jars should colonize in two weeks. Quit trying to save them. Rye is cheap. RR

Well.... i did it anyways..... it looks like i was right about the rye being too dry too. Cause when i put the rye in the terrarium and soaked the casing mix. Only two days later and i see mycellium break through to the top. I know this is a kinda experimental thing but... it looks like its working. I don't smell or see any contamination. So..... in a couple more days i will start my growing. I'll keep this post open to update people on my progress. Wish me luck, lol. Later people.

Lol... thanks man... It seems like it's going pretty good so far. It's been like a day or two... so.. hasn't been that long yet. I'm going to wait close to a week. Then turn the light on and start 'em up. I'm keeping an eye on it tho. I'd hate to see any contaminations. But the terrarium is a double tub that i bought from one of the sponsors. With a hinge on it made of zip ties. Not much air moves through it. Later on i'm thinking of either buying a whole new setup or improving the one i have. Thinking of cutting holes in the sides on the top tub and use silicone gel to slap on some filter disks for air exchange. Anyways... Later guys. I'll keep ppl posted on my progress. Hope it works, lol.

LOL.... well...yea i should've started over. With some new rye. It doesn't matter anyways. It was all a learning experience. I'm starting fresh soon. Once i get the chance. Maybe this time i won't get contamination. Damn chalky blue mold. It was everywhere. O well. Try, try again. This time i'll do it right, lol.
