Sponge Humidification
    #676255 - 06/13/02 04:56 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

A fellow grower I know told me he uses a sponge in his terrarium to sustain his humidity levels. he makes sure the sponge isnt dry every once in a while, and saturates w/ water when necessary. I have also heard of just putting a glass of water in the terrarium... I just mist and fan, but are these viable methods for humidification?

the sponge idea is ok but sponges are suspect to contams all the time. Knats and ass bugs love to lay eggs in'em too. The glass of water thing sounds like it wouldnt work. Just get some perilite. In Texas you can get it @ any calloways or garden store for CHEAP. Never had any bugs or contams on perilite!!! Or you could break down and get a humidifier. If i were you i would invest in some perilite, it last forever and is cheap...

Perlite isn't always the answer. I've used a jar with some water/h202 in it for humidification..worked fine but adding a fish pump and a air stone into it works a charm. Perlite does work but its too messy for me. If i use it..I use it dry.

Just curious, what do you do with the perlite dry?

Sounds like it could work, assuming the sponge is large enough to supply ample water. As far as contaminants go, perlite covers a much larger area, and is just as 'risky', add a little peroxide to it and you shouldn't have any problems.

Heres my idea, take a container.. fill with water and a lil bleach, put a sponge in the container so the spounge is still try on top.. then perhaps it would wick the water up like perlite does?

Heh, just a idea tho.
