birdseed molding before pressure cooking
    #6760556 - 04/08/07 09:14 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

My birdseed was soaked for 24 hours and then put in the jars. Then I put the lids, with polyfill stuffed holes, loosely on the jars. I only had time to pressure cook half of the jars last night and this morning I woke up and the un-pressure-cooked birdseed has started to grow some (just a little bit) of white mold.

I dont want to throw this stuff out if I dont have to, and pressure cooking should kill all of the mold and bacteria, right?

Right. There are thousands of mold spores and bacterial endospores present at all times, regardless of whether they have started to grow or not. A proper PC'ing will take care of them.

A lot of people use sprouted grains. It's fine, as long as you're good on water content.

Water content is even easier to mess up once they've sprouted.

Sprouts release starch, like boiled potatoes.
Starch is STICKY, like glue.
Causes clumping & increase odds of bacterial bloom.

In my best "ALI" voice.

IF THEY SPROUT, THROW THEM OUT.
