i had the same looking deal i clipped the wires to the heatingelement but fan still works fine looks like you should be able to do the same id clip it close to the soldered edges though so not hot wire dangling inside.

Seems to me the simplest solution would be to not disconnect anything and just have the heating element outside the unit, still connected up. This way you avoid short-circuiting or overpowering anything. Of course, when you turn on the dehydrator, that heating element will still turn on as well, so keep it the hell away from the table it's on and don't touch it.
I suppose if you really wanted to avoid just setting it outside the unit and wanted to remove it entirely, the safest option would be to snip out the heating element and solder in a resistor (or several) with the same total resistance. The first method would be a lot simpler though (if a little more dangerous).

alright so i want to take out the heating element because it wont sit outside of the case far enough away it just dangles on the bottom
so how do i go about taking the thing out ? resistor needed? i have a sodering iron so if i can figure out the resistance of the heating element and happen to find a resistor in a old electronic thing

Ok, the next step sort of depends on how things are connected up in there. If the heating element's connected in parallel with the rest of the gubbins (probably will be), all you'll have to do is cut that thing out of there. Otherwise, not so easy. A good close up picture of the wires connecting everything (especially wires coming out of the power supply unit) would be helpful.

Just keep the two wires hooked up to the fan...don't worry about color...there should be just two wires running to the fan.Cap the others and tape them up...you don't need no resistors and crap like that if your just running a fan straight off the 120v feed. If you know how to use a multimeter or even have one just get a hot and a common to the fan...pretty straightforward.

Snipping the black wire off the Heater core would cause the Heater to stop working and should allow the rest too, since thats a seperate ground needed to the seperate power wires going to the Heater. Disconnecting that wouldnt leave any hot wires around either.

Id say snip like this, incase you needed to rehook, you could still do so.
You could still keep it connected in there, but it wouldnt be running. Eletric tape or cap off the end if you want to be extra cautious.

I only suggested the resistors because I thought things might have been connected up in series (not the case). Looks like you just need to clip the black wire leading from the heating element. Note you'll still have live (red) hooked up to it, though, so watch it.

As long as the black is cut and not connected, it wont be live at all to be shocked or anything.

Well, the live will still be supplied, so touching that element while not standing on a rubber mat will give you a nasty shock.

True I just ment the heating unit alone. You would really have to wedge your finger down in between the metal to touch it tho.

I wish someone would have told you before you made the modification. The dehydrator isn't worth much without the heater. It wont tottaly dry the mushrooms. You might as well just point a regular fan at them... How hot was it getting anyways? My dehydrator operates at 140-150oF and I've noticed no loss of potency.
