Have a look at this guide for spawning to coir. Although adding something to balance the PH isn't absolutely necessary, I would highly recommend it in order to avoid contamination in later flushes and therefore increase your yield. I'd also recommend adding up to 15% spend coffee grounds, and/or seaweed extract. I don't have any experience with worm castings, but coir has worked well for me in the past. Have a search for coir in the grow log section if you want to see how well it's worked for other people.

I never add anything to coir except coffee grounds,Than again I do toss them after 2nd flush so I would even know if they contaminate don the line because by the time that happens I will already have more casings waiting to get in their and take their spot on the greenhouse

Just make sure you use an okay spawn ratio- . pts is a small amount of spawn for a brick- I wouldn't do more than 3:1 if your not treating the medium. But it works just fine. Don't worry about PH- you can play with that in your caseing layer.

I use 2-3 qts of spawn to each half brick of coir, this will fill my sweater boxes to a nice 3 and a half to four inch depth

djkj6 said: thanks for the info, i was going to use the whole brick...i had no idea that it made so much from such a small package....i just cased the wbs pints until i found out more about coir????
i have 2 quarts going now of pf classic, i will have to break the brick and then just do a montub tek after spawning to the coir...
i will post pics and a follow up once the jars are done and i start my "first mono tub project" -----WISH ME LUCK---- LOL
Have fun trying to break up a brick of dry coir,If you get frustrated with it you can just hydrate the whole thing and use what you need and store the unused coir in a sealed bucket,I used some that had been hydrated 2-3 weeks ago once.It had been in a sealed paint bucket since it was hydrated, don't add anything to this or it will grow contamination while your waiting but if it is just straight coir you should be fine

Hi. I'm not too experienced, but I've used straight coir to spawn to and it worked great. Also, one time I put a little bit of sterilized garden mix (the kind that "feeds plants for up to 3 months") in the coir. That also did the trick. In short, I love coir. Although my best grow has been wavy caps outside, indoors, coir rules in my humble opinion.
Coir is pretty easy to cut up with a chisel if you hack with the "grain" in the coir. Lots of time it has a grain to it where it's pressed together. Using a power saw will generate a shitload of dust and seems kind of overkill.
Anyway, good luck. Also, I didn't bother to pasturize my coir either. Seems relatively sterile as is.
