Hi. the Landotter here.
Got a bit of an anamoly in my grow chamber.
This particular cake is resting directly on the perlite layer
and has lots of little cubes and abhorts growing near the bottom of the cake.
One large cube has these odd brown-ish striations on the stalk and a very definite base which is bright white. Cap, brown striped stalk, then a thick bulbous white base. Here is a crudely drawn pic (no digital camera)...



What I want to know is: is this normal? Cuz it looks odd.

Also, when harvesting and consuming abhorts, how many of the little guys do you (on average) pop back? I know they're strong - don't wanna overdo it as this will be a test of my first batch.

We call it "fat ass" syndrome! It is from the cake resting directly on the perlite. (is the shroom touching the perlite also?)

Eat a couple grams dry of the aborts. all i need is 1.5 grams for a full blown trip, ever since my 12 g experience.

I did a cake that was directly on the perlite. The bottom shrooms were so water logged and mushy that I just threw them away. Try putting a piece of foil on the perlite then the cake on the foil.

the brown steaks are bacteria that live in water-logged tissue,
it's time to get them off the perlite.

Ok, I have put the cake back onto it's lid. Now, re: this bacteria - is it dangerous at all? Is that particular cube and by extension the entire cake infected now? I have already tested some of the abhorts from that cake and they are all right ... but I'm wondering about the big one with the brown streaks. Is it safe?

I have seen some strains that always no matter who is growing it maintain those brown lines. I think its just genetic.

Yeah, my friends has a little brown streakage - their like fine darker lines then the rest of the stalk. I think its normal for any mushrooms - but do take them off the pearlite... I dont believe their dangerous - I've seen him eat several like that, and I've eaten a few myself.

It's a good thing I read this post. This time around I put my cakes directly on the perlite and after they started growing some looked a little different, I guess it was because they were water logged and there were several aborts. I picked them up to put them on the lids and there was like a half inch of perlite stuck to the bottom.....what a mess. I think everything will be alright now. Everything looks fine except for a little brusing from picking them up......poor little guys. You guys saved me from having a shitty flush. Thanks.
