Sour smell coming from Spawn mix

I mixed 9 trays of spawn about 10 days ago. The mix was 1 quart colonized texas wbs to about 4lbs tenn stud prepasteurized hpoo. The containers I used are relatively short, about 4 inches tall and I filled them about 3 3/4" with spawn. I put the lids on after I was done mixing everything and set them aside for the past ten days. On the 7 day mark I checked'm and they smell really bad and nothing much is going on. Should I have left more room in the containers? Should I have poked some holes in the lid and put tyvek/micropore/polyfil in them. I was thinking of drilling out 4-5 1/2" holes in the corners of the lids and covering them with two layers of micropore tape.
I mixed three other containers that are a bit larger and had more room between the spawn and the lids and they're doing fine with no smell. Anyone know what happened?

Did you smell the quart of WBS before spawning it?

Yeah, they all smelled fine. I also did three other containers and they're going as planned. Just all the shorter containers I used are having this problem.

Did you wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, and/or wear rubber gloves?
Are you sick?

Just like spawn jars/bags. A spawned substrate has to have GAS EXCHANGE.
No G/E, you most often end up with anaerobic conditions. That favor bacteria & fermentation.
Sounds like you are using plastic sweater or shoe sized trays. (with a lid)
Toss the stinky ones.
Next time, drill a couple 1/2 in holes in the lids. And, cover them with micropore tape.
The bigger tray lids, may not have been as tight. Allowing for some G/E.

I figured I needed to have some gas exchange only after the fact. Oh well. And you're right, I have been using 12 qt sweater boxes. Those are actually working, albeit very slowly, whereas the other shorter smaller tupperware went sour and completely stalled.

I use trays with lids I just put them on tight on three corners and leave a fourth popped open, so far its been alright.
Not saying that its perfect, I feel I should put some holes in lid, or put foil with holes in it over them.

I always used 16 qt sweater boxes for the greenhouse, when waiting for them to colonize just cover with foil and poke holes with a fork,no need to ruin the lids
