simple pf-tek jars - help!
    #6754066 - 04/06/07 12:34 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, so I've been brewing up a couple of pf-tek style jars with B+, and out of 11 half pint jars, so far no contamination, but they have taken a very, very long time to spread the myc, its been almost a month now and most are only beginning to be covered fully. hopefully i can take them out soon for fruiting, but i was wondering... do pf-tek jars, if inoculated at the same time, tend to be fully inoculated at the same time? that is, will they all be ready at the same time? or is it common to fruit one or two jars at a time, depending on when u see pins?

also, i was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for casing formulas, or where i can buy a casing kit of some sort?

There can be a lot of variation between jars, but they should all be done within a week or so of each other.

Remember to wait another week after full colonization to birth them so the myc has some time to digest the colonized substrate.

As far as casing...50/50 mix and Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting mix are both pretty popular and there's plenty of posts here about how to use them.

For cakes, I'd suggest a dunk and roll. Don't crumble and case.

Hey RR, I'm curious as to why you'd recommend dunk and roll over crumble and case.

Because you don't add any nutrients when you case a cake, therefore the only purpose of the casing is to add moisture, which a dunk does without destroying the cake. Crumbling and casing sets back fruiting a week or two over dunk and roll, because it forces the cake to knit back together again before it can fruit.

Good reason, thanks!

Would you recommend crumble and case to someone who was just worried about getting more fruits and not so worried about time?

No, I would recommend they crumble the cake and use it as spawn to three times as much horse manure and/or coir.
