    #6749587 - 04/05/07 07:21 AM (16 years, 11 months ago)

So I have some (viable)Anadenanthera peregrina seeds and am going to sprout these.
Anyone that has done this?
Whats the best way?

i used paper towel (like pot seeds) and also just planting in sandy soil. the seeds were fresh though. no i have old seeds and they wont grow. old viable seeds are likely not viable. many people use fungicide.

The seeds I have are fresh.. Tried germinating two in the fashion you described but they didn't germinate.. will try again then.

I usually just put them sideways (not flat) in the soil and spray it very lightly everyday...just enough water that it will evap by the next day. This prevents rot as much as possible because water isn't standing for mold to grow. I've thought about the paper towel method but never got to try it. If the seeds are real brittle they're old and no good, but I trust you when you say your seeds are good.

Bought them from B&T so they should be good.. I accidentally broke one and it was green/yellow inside so I'm hoping it's a sign of freshness..

i had some viable seeds i bought at maya ethnobotanicals almost two years ago, i didnt know if they would be viable or not, so i put about fifteen or so right beneath the soil level in a peat cup. Watered, and viola, check my garden thread a couple posts up, they sprouted. Dont let them get too cold tho, as they're quite frost tender (i found out). Some moist peat moss should make them sprout right up!

I planted mine sideways in perlite, sand and soil (different pots) which was kept damp, but haven't had any success. I got the seeds from B&T too but they were thin & brittle so I'm doubtful if the failure is due to the seeds or my growing ignorance.

Felixhigh makes a good point, if somewhat obliquely, I didn't know at the time but Anadenanthera is one of those species which needs nitrogen fixing bacteria to be in the soil to germinate. You can buy this but they're found on the roots of legumes like peas & beans.

it doesn't need it t germinate, it just needs it to keep going after germination. i think that if the seeds are viable, there are little problems. although they seem to die after sprouting rather easily in my care...
