Pasteurization large amounts of substrate?
    #6752000 - 04/05/07 07:44 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I was wondering how those of you using moderate to lager scale production pasteurize all of your substrate. Right now I have an oven roaster that I use to cook 4 autoclavable bags filled with horse poo or compost. I set the thermostat to about 150F and it stays within a 150-170F range. It takes several hours to get the center temp of each bag up to 140F. Once there I let it sit there for a little over an hour and then remove it and replace it with 4 more bags and wait again. These 8 bags I use to spawn 4 trays which fills my 2 tier greenhouse.

Right now it isn't too terribly bad as far as time goes, but in the future I plan on running a 4 tier greenhouse. My question is, is there any way to conserve time by doing more at once, and if so how? The only options I could think of would be to fill my bathtub with hot water and add a submersible heater to it and toss in all the bags I am cooking and then cover the whole thing with a large sheet of Styrofoam. I just don't know where to get a submersible heater that goes up to 150F or so. Or possibly getting a square feed trough from a feed store and placing it on all four burners of my stove and adding water and the bags and cook them that way.

Do either of these ideas sound feasible? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Bearing in mind I'm in an apartment and don't have the ability to pasteurize outside or in a garage.

Use a big cooler. Dump your hpoo in there and add the right temp water or slightly higher and seal it up for a few hours. Presto.

It normally takes about 6 hours to get the internal temp high enough for the 4 bags. Will a cooler keep the temperature steady for 6 hours?

Walmart has a huge cooler that works great. I only do 1,1/4 hr runs and the temp is about 15F less than the temp poured in. Drain the water, pull out your pillow case or laundry bag and get going on the next run. Real efficient..
