Colonization ?'s 1st Time Post
    #6752613 - 04/05/07 10:32 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I've done a great deal of research on this site and a few others.
And to let everyone know I'm starting my microscopy study with some G.C. strain. And later T.C. for their nice "Bunch" style growth that I've seen on a few grow logs. And now to proceed with my quest for more knowledge:

  • Substrate = WBS,BRF,Verm,Water.

  • Jars = 4 - 1 Pint Wide Mouth Jars

  • Lids = 1 Hole in the Center

  • Incubation Environment = 2 FAE Per/Day 80 Degrees

Testing samples have shown excellent colonization results at nearly 90% colonization in 19 days. I thought to myself "Self, these have colonized fairly quickly for having used basically the PF Tek with the addition of soaked WBS and Larger than recommended jars containing only 1 inoculation point with 2cc of multispore".

  • Last 10% of uncolonized portion of jar is the very bottoms.

So from what I've read a few places is that I may have possibly over-cooked the bottom of the substrate (Though I have a Rack in my PC)
or I have not waited long enough for full colonization.
==My Main Question==
  • Should I flip the jars?

  • Should I wait longer ("Typical nOOb impatience" ) 5-10 days longer

  • Or is it expected that the bottom is burnt?(No discoloration seen)

Thanks for the help in advance and sorry for the long post.
Gotta start my first post ever off correctly...Right...?...
But one thing I have definitely learned and will implement is Rye, Grains, and 1 qt. Jars, LC, and Cloning. I plan to use 1 WBS/BRF cake as Cake2Grain for Jars of Rye. The other 3 cakes are going probably "customized wafer tek" and either RRs 50/50 or Coir (Maybe).

Welcome to the Shroomery!

Never heard of mixing WBS with BRF before, but it sounds like a good experiment to me! Although pure grains tend to colonize in 10-15 days so you may want to go this direction if you have a pressure cooker.

You don't need FAE for incubation, and I hope you're not opening the jars. 80F is good though.

If there's no discoloration on the bottom of the jars then I doubt you harmed them significantly. If they dont colonize down there you'll have to get all that off before you use them. Might wanna flip the jars upside down for a few days when they get near full colonization.

Good luck!

Welcome, Nice 1st post. I would say that the very bottom, has more moisture, therefore hasent colonized, see if thats the case. Might try turning them over. A great casing tek is roadkills 60/40

RE: BlehMaestro - FAE of the Closet [Re: BlehMaestro]

Good evening Maestro. No the only FAE is just letting a little air into the closet I have them incubating in. I came up with a good steady 80 Degree method. Keeping your air conditioner on 76 Degrees, a closed closet door and a box at the very top shelf is a perfect 80 degrees.
But it could also be that I live in an older house and it's not very well insulated. But I know that an attic gets pretty hot in mostly all homes. I don't know others will have to test the theory as well.
"Zero Cost Incubation"
I have a pressure cooker and I believe I'm prepared for All Grain.

What Up. Thanks for the nice welcoming everybody. Now as for those jars I believe if I don't see progress in 1 more day there getting flipped. I agree, I don't believe I scorched these puppies (Bottom is not too dry or wet looking and no discoloration). I'll check out Roadkills 60/40 casing method.

I used to incubate in my attic all the time. The attic itself would get like 130ish so I would place the jars in a box on the attic floor and cover with a towel, around 90 degrees they stayed at. I would flip them now, and kinda shake around a bit upside down to mabey mix the grain/mycelium a bit.
