Needed area of tyvek for air supply during incubation?
    #6751283 - 04/05/07 04:09 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I have small plastic sealable jars that are 10cm by 10cm and 9cm deep (for americans thats 4" x 4" and 3.5" deep). They have plastic tops. I intend to pierce small holes with a screwdriver for inoculation and put silicon over it to use as selfhealing ports. I planned to drill another slightly bigger opening to stuff with polyfill for air. But I found tyvek and I'd prefer to use it instead!

Question: Can the holes over which I will glue (or tape) tyvek be about the size of my screwdriver (diameter about half a cm) or do they need to be bigger? How big do they need to be to have sufficient air exchange? Does tyvek even exchange LESS air than polyfill would?

It would really be a drag for me to cut bigger openings over the plastic lids, they are a bit thicker as well.

Thanks!

At .5 cm, use one hole. If you use a phillips type screwdriver that makes a smaller hole, use two holes.

Ah ok so:: half a cm of tyvek covered hole is enough for air exchange.

Thanks, once more, RR!
