FAE Q
    #6749152 - 04/05/07 01:18 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

in my Fc i have an aqurium air pump pumping for 15 mins every 2 hours

i put 3 holes on the top of the fc and tapped cotton over them like a filter

is this going to be suffcient for the co2 to be pushed out? i understand its heavier so does that mean that the holes at the top are doing nothing? also the humidifier runs routinely some more air exchange from that?

That's not enough air exchange. In addition, you don't need to filter the air for a fruiting chamber. I'd suggest dumping the aquarium pump and just drilling holes and/or leaving the lid crooked. CO2 is only slightly heavier than normal air, and won't drain like water, even with holes at the bottom, which you should also have. I have LOTS of holes in my terrariums, including on the floor. I drill at least a dozen or more on all six sides. My larger terrariums have several hundred holes drilled into them.

so i should drill holes on the lower half of the terrium and put some kind of filter over those holes right ?

because i dont want the humidity from my ultra sonic just flowing out of the terrium

besides polyfill what would keep contams out and not restrict gas exchange?

When RR posted...I think you missed the point.
You don't need to keep contaminants out during fruiting.

You can have 3/8" holes drilled all over your tub or terrarium or even slits cut in your greenhouse plastic (per RR...I myself could never cut into a martha).

put your fruiting chamber above waist height, where-ever your store it, no where near the ground. holes all long the sides AND BOTTOM and no polyfil used in any of the tubs.

Done right, the air rising through the bottom of the chamber (holes there, remember) will evaporate moisture off your perlite and keep the chamber steady at about 95%+ with occasionally supplementing with your humidifier in short bursts.

Here's what mine looks like, it sits at about a four foot level, in the middle of my living room, lol... not the holes and the fact that I make it "float" off the shelving unit so to not restrict bottom air flow.

RR, would your fruiting chamber work in a dry climate? It seems like it would work really well in an already humid climate but in, say, Arizona the outside air would be bone dry. It seems that it dry out really quick.

Sometimes you need to use your own discretion bro, botton line the most important thing in growing mushrooms is high humidity FAE's come a close second! GL
